[Gorlan] Second Attept « Thread Started on Sept 12, 2009, 11:44am »
OOC: Ranger characters would be very much appreciated !
IC: Frank Gillespe clicked his tongue encouragingly to the small sorrel horse, and flipped the rope in his hands idly, grinning lazily at his eight-year-old daughter, Addison, sitting on the fence. "See? Th' poor hawse was only fakin' his limp! He thinks it'll keep me from workin' him so hard." he shook his head at the horse as it jogged past him again. "That's the trouble with a smart horse--he gets too smart. If'n I can't get him broke of th' habit, I'm a gonna have to turn him lose. And that'll be a shame."
He flicked the end of the rope suddenly across the sorrel's path, causing him to spin and begin galloping in the opposite direction. Frank watched the sorrel closely for a moment, then turned his lazy grin back toward Addison. "Why don't ya go in th' house an' see if your Ma has got any old bread crusts left. Let's see if'n we can't bribe Ol' Faker here, inta workin' a bit harder."
"O.K. Da. Are ya sure ya don't want me ta get you somethin' ta eat to?" Addison teased, as she scrambled off the fence and started toward the cabin. "Aw, I'm sure." He smiled broadly as he watched Addison sprinting off to the house. His daughter was only the second pride and joy of his life, his wife, Rowan, being the first.
Something moved in the trees, catching his attention and holding it as it came closer, following the trail toward his house in the clearing. Watching the horse and rider as they came closer, and listening to the beat of the hooves, Frank instantly knew that he didn't know the rider. Turning back he tugged lightly on the sorrel's lead, bringing it in. He grabbed the horses' halter and led it out of the pasture toward the barn, keeping his eyes on the stranger who kept his steady pace along the trail through the woods.

Dalin followed Ben. They were nearing Araluen. Technically they were already in Araluen, they were in Gorlan. Dalin was starting to get tired but he did not complain as he longed to go back to Araluen. Someone was there. Two people in fact. He peered at them. He looked at Ben, tilting his head, indicating that he was curious. As usual. He wanted to find out more about who they were and what they were doing there. It was pretty rare to see people in these parts of the country. Although he wanted to go back, curiosity won over his homesickness. Curiosity almost always did.

Half-way to the barn and Frank-- Wait a minute. That's a Ranger! This realization made Frank stand a little straighter. He hadn't laid eyes on a Ranger in coming on three years, but he still knew what they looked like. Even as he watched the Ranger, he spotted a second. Not hedgin' their bets this time around.
-----------------------------------------
Ben was grateful to be back in the saddle, but more than anything, he was grateful to be back in Araluan, where everyone spoke the same language as he. Behind him Dalin followed along, quiet for once. Ben turned his thoughts toward Araluan fief and, incidentally, Crowley as well. Maybe he'd had a premonition, Ben thought sourly, to send a letter to the docks stating that they were in charge of Gorlan Fief until further notice. Maybe.
Returning to the present, he spotted a clearing through the trees. Turning his horse toward it, he also noticed a well-kept cabin and barn situated in the center of said clearing. Drawing nearer, he saw a man leading a sorrel horse toward the barn, but seemingly looking in their direction. Glancing back over his shoulder with an almost casual air, Ben found Dalin looking back at him, head tilted to one side, indicating that he was curious. Like always. Giving Dalin a shrug in reply, he turned his eyes back toward the cab---Now wait just a minute. That gent looked familiar. Real familiar. As they drew yet closer, it clicked. Frank Gillespe, horse thief.

Ben shrugged and Dal took that as a yes . After all, silence did mean consent. Dal, unlike Ben, did not find this face familiar, but he knew that that man was not up to any good. He resisted the urge to make his horse go faster, getting to the man quickly. Instead he took the horse to the same pace as Ben's. "Who's he?"Dalin mouthed, making no sound.

Dirk Hawkens' feet were bloody from his long walk, never having taken a rest since early this morning. Though his enemies were now all dead, he had yet to get used to them being so and quench his habits of being constantly on the move. His eyes were drooping, half closed in exhaustion, when he heard the sound of hooves.
He instinctively dropped to the ground and scrambled into some brush, hiding off the side of the road as two horses came into view. His beedy, blackish eyes narrowed in suspicion as he eyed the two riders: one kid, one adult. Hunters probably, given their bows. Dirk didn't know anything about rangers since he'd only recentally entered Araluen once again, and though he'd been born, he'd left around the age of eight.
Still, best to keep hidden. His luck, they'd be hunters of a different kind. Say...slave seekers like the last bunch. His eyes narrowed at the memory and though his blood ran hot with anger, he forced himself to keep still and down.

Frank continued to wait, as the two riders continued toward him at a walk, slow and steady.
Ben's mind flashed back to another time and another place: he and another Ranger had all but caught Frank on a stolen horse, as he led them on a wild race across country. As they reached the cliffs which dropped steeply down to the river below, Ben and his comrade had been joined by a third Ranger and her apprentice. With just thirty feet between them and the cliff, and Frank trapped between the two of them, with nowhere to go...Frank had jumped his horseoff the cliff.
He had never been seen since. Many had thought that he had died from the fall, or drowned in the river, but a few had maintained that he was still alive somewhere. Those few had been right, Ben decided. He may have heard the scuffle of leaves as something large darted for cover, but he didn't pay any attention to it-- his attention was fixated on Frank.
As Ben's horse plodded up to him, Frank felt a old prickly sensation running up and down his spine. The horse stopped before him, and frank and Ben studied each other, Ben with a lawman's perspective; Frank with a former outlaw's...and a touch of uncertainty--he no longer had to look out for just himself, now.
"So." your not dead, yet. followed by, What are you doing around here? Had we only known, we could have picked you up years ago.
Frank studied Ben a minute longer before replying. "Hello." Nice to meet you, too.

Dalin flicked his eyes to look at the bush. There was something there, maybe someone. He knew that Ben was still watching the man, whoever that guy was. Seemed important enough. Ben didn't answer his question and he shrugged it off. Must be too absorbed in watching the man, he thought.
He kept an eye on the bush in case the thing [or person] was dangerous.
He watched the exchange anxiously. Who was this man and why was Ben so... Dal wasn't sure what he could call it. When the need came, he would help his mentor, whatever happened.

Dirk's eyes narrowed as he watched through the cover of the underbrush, hoping they'd do their business and get on with it so he could continue his tiresome journey. Despite the begging of his muscles for a quick rest, he didn't dare close his eyes to take a short nap to pass the time. He'd stay alert and ready to run should they spot him. He wouldn't let it happen again. He wouldn't go back there. Not to the beatings, the starvation, the -
He squeezed his eyes shut to block out the memories, breath coming in heaves as he fought the memories back under control. He would no longer be a slave to them. They were dead. They were no longer a threat. A few minutes later, his breathing slowed down to normal and he opened his eyes to continue watching the two possible new threats.

[Sorry. Off for Thanksgiving.]
Frank and Ben eyed each other in silence for several minutes. The tension was broken, however, when Addison came racing out of the house. "Here's th' bread Da! Ma said supper'll be ready in a half-hour, and ta clean up now so's we can eat on time." She skidded to a stop an arm's length away, handing Frank the dry crust, and gaping openly at the two Rangers. "Who are they?" she demanded.
Ben was only slightly surprised by the girl's appearance. The flow of words that spilled out reminded him of Dalin, who at the moment, was showing a great propensity for silence.
Frank took his eyes off of Ben's to look at his daughter. A slight smile crossed his face as he watched her staring wide-eyed at the two riders who held both Frank's life and his family's future in their hands. "They're Rangers, Addy." He tried to keep the tension from showing in his voice as he answered her query.
Ben's sharp ears picked it up though, and he filed the information away for later. For now, though...keep Frank off balance. Or at least uncomfortable. "Mind if we stop here for the night?"
He was right in thinking Frank would be uncomfortable. "Well...I reckon not." Frank wondered if he would be having a sleepless night on his hands, what with wondering whether and when the Rangers would attempt to bring him in. "Th' barn's over there. Find an empty stall and bed your horses down...if'n ya want. I'm sure my wife would be happy to add a couple more plates to th' table."

Dalin didn't understand what was happening here. But he trusted Ben and knew that his mentor would have a plan. Ben always did, or at least it seemed to Dal. Which was why he wanted to be a ranger. He wasn't too bad at plans himself, but he was still quite new an apprentice and had much to learn. He longed to ask his mentor who they were, but he didn't think Ben'd be too pleased with him butting in. Better listen and find out what's going on first...
Then he remembered the bush. "Ben..." he said in a small voice. He glanced at the bush.
