Lea continued to stare out at the waves, "I have felt that way before..." she paused for a bit. "I wanted to die, so I kept taking risks. Stealing stuff mostly, usually halfway hoping they would catch me or kill me in the attempt. But at some point I stopped wanting to die and realized that I was living just for the thrill of the next job, the rush you get when you don't know if you are going to live or die." Her eyes glittered as she relived some of those times. "At some point I just started living again. Living and caring."

"The caring is the bad part." she said softly, and after a moment, "and the really good part." Then she smiled as she thought of Merdoc and their times together.

After the comfortable silence drew on for a bit longer she turned to Brynunn, "Say, you said your job here is over. You looking for another job now? I suspect the Araluen's would hire you to come fight with them and the Scotti against the Aslavians."

Brynunn gave a half shrug. She cared naught which side won, having forced herself to look at everything neutrally. Lea was right. Caring was the worst part, but as for the other half...well, she'd long forgotten anything about it being full of happiness.

"I may." After a short moment of brooding, she asked, "It have anything similar to yours?" She wasn't talking about her current cover-up.

Lea pursed her lips to hide a smirk. "I don't know about that, but I know they are recruiting mercenaries. Especially those good with a sword. I overheard some of the men talking in Araluen about it. Apparently King Duncan is paying well for quality Mercs that won't run when the going gets tough." Lea's face grew serious. "I also heard that the outlook for our side is rather dismal. Apparently the Aslavians have a huge force."

Lea was hoping to get in on some of the action, now that they were landing in Gallica. Hopefully she could catch up to Dougal and the rest of the SWC. Maybe she could get a horse from Merdoc! That ought to surprise Dougal. The last time he had seen her, she'd had no idea how to ride. After the trek from Norgate, she had gotten good enough to rival some of the battleschool apprentices. Though she wasn't an expert by any means.

"Merdoc wants me to stay with him as they head for the front, but I think I am ready to move on. I need some action and he would never let me near the fighting." Lea produced a small dagger and twirled it expertly for a moment, revealing to Brynunn that she knew how to handle small blades anyway. "Maybe they will hire me on as a merc!"

Uh-huh. Brynunn highly doubted that Lea was looking for job as a merc, pretty sure that she already had one. She just had to figure out what. So she let her eyes linger on the blade twirling in Lea's fingers then quickly scanned the deck, making sure Merdoc wasn't out. She was also pretty sure he wasn't supposed to know Lea could handle a blade. As she scanned she shifted her body to hide the knife from possible eyes and only when she didn't see any, she wondered why she'd done it. Wasn't she supposed to be keeping her emotions at bay? No contact. At all. Not even an inkling of a liking.

Having been reminded [another fact that bothered her for she usually never slipped], she schooled herself back into indifference and faced the land.

"I just might." Her voice held a definite yes to those that could hear that sort of unspoken agreement though to anyone else it'd seem like a neutral comment. In truth, she was half-tired of the boat. Like Lea, she needed something to keep her occupied, something that'd feed her body adrenaline every so often. The time of 'vacation' on the boat - despite that it was all work - was getting boring and she was dangerously growing restless and when that happened, she had to fight to keep from going suicidal and joining those she missed the most.

And besides, fighting for her life might be just the thing she needed to get her walls back in order. For some reason, they seemed to be down lately. The thought made her frown.

Lea looked sideways at Brynunn and saw her move to block anyone else's view of her hands. Quickly she slipped the knife back up her sleeve in one fluid motion, as if she had done it a thousand times before, which, of course, she had.

"Well maybe we could "sign-up" together. As you can see, I am far from helpless." Lea smiled and then turned her back on the approaching shore and turned to scan the deck. She scowled as Merdoc popped up on deck and her heart gave a little leap of joy at the site of him. She was really getting far to attached to the handsome Scotti. Already she was sure that she wouldn't be able to kill him if Dougal ordered it. Then where would she be in the Corps?

Merdoc saw her and stopped in the middle of the deck and put his hands on his hips and glared. Lea glared back. "He is getting too damn possessive and bossy." Lea muttered.

"Want me to scare him?" Brynunn whispered with a faint of a smile before she could help herself. She immediately wiped her face clean and turned to face Merdoc with her arms crossed and her eyes blank, not because of her recent words, but to place herself back into a familiar situation. That slip of happiness hadn't been like her for a long while. No, it wasn't like her at all.

She thought to simply leave the two 'love birds' alone, but for some reason she felt protective of the 'girl' and stayed where she was. She'd worry over that later, but for now she concentrated on listening. Keeping her face blank wasn't a worry - she'd been doing it way too long to slip even once.

"Want me to scare him?"

Lea suppressed a smile herself at the thought and shook her head. "I suppose not." Besides, she wasn't so sure Brynunn could scare Merdoc anyway. "But feel free to thump him if he says something stupid or offensive." She said loud enough for him to hear as he approached.

"What did I tell you, Lea?" Merdoc shot Brynunn a look of warning, then turned his attention to Lea.

Lea stared him down for a full minute without saying anything. "Since when did I give you permission to tell me who I can or cannot talk to?" This was an old arguement and he normally liked to have it in privacy so he could divert her attention from the subject at hand. Lea wasn't having any of it as he grabbed ahold of her elbow and tried to steer her away from Brynunn.

"She is dangerous. I am just trying to protect you." Merdoc countered as Lea pulled her elbow out of his grasp.

"She doesn't seem to be dangerous to me. We are getting along just fine." Lea leanded back on the railing again, not budging. "I wasn't through talking to her yet."

Merdoc stepped back, this was the first time Lea had really exherted herself against him and he wasn't sure how to react. "Come on Lea, we need to get packed. They are going to be docking shortly."

"I am already packed and ready to go." Lea nodded her head to the backpack lying on the deck a few feet away. Everything she owned was in that sack, or on her person. "Why don't you go pack and I will meet you on shore."

Merdoc folded his arms across his muscled chest and shook his head. "Not a chance I am letting you off this ship without me." He knew she was going to try to slip away from him. They'd had that argument about three hours ago.

"I told you it is time for me to move on. This is a whole new country for me to explore." Lea told him again, for the fourth time that morning at least.

"And I told you that I am not letting you go." he said.

The stood there glaring at eachother, neither saying a word, neither giving in as the ship made it's way closer and closer to the shore.

Finally Merdoc couldn't take it anymore and grabbed ahold of Lea, as if he was getting ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her off.

"I need to pack and I am not letting you out of my site." He said angrily, knowing he was being foolish if he was forcing her to stay with him, but since all his men were watching, he couldn't let her "win". "I am certainly not leaving you here with her." He jerked his thumb towards Brynunn.

Something loosened in Brynunn at Merdoc's claim, or hardened depending on how one looked at it. One thing that really ticked her off, was men thinking they had automatic control over their female lover.

Acting on an urge, she reached out and gripped Lea's arm. Her lips moved with the sound of a haunting forest and then she released her. Eyes smiling wickedly, she took a step back and shifted her gaze to Merdoc. "Your next battle, watch for the shadows. He's getting impatient." And then she turned just as the boat docked, and made her way off the plank, wondering if he'd still keep Lea after watching her be 'hexed' by a follower of the Devil. And if he'd take her warning seriously.

Merdoc took a step back and glared at the woman, then made a holy symbol in the air behind her back as she disembarked. He turned back to Lea, "I told you she was trouble."

Lea stood there with her arms crossed glaring at him. "We have had this discussion before and I am threw with it."

"Lea, I-" Merdoc reached for her, "I just don't want anything to happen to you." He whispered and drew her into his arms. "I've told you before, I care about you."

Lea stood stiffly and angrily for a moment, but as usual, he knew just how to get to her and she finally relented and hugged him back. "Go get your stuff. I will wait for you here." She sighed and turned around to watch Brynunn disappearing into the throng on the beach. She had a feeling they would be running into each other again in the not too distant future.

She then searched the crowd for any members of the SWC, but she didn't see any before Merdoc was back with his pack and armor. They walked down the gangway and made their way to the Scotti encampment that was already established, though the troops that had come over earlier had already moved on.

They settled into a tent and Merdoc went off to the council tent to find out what his orders were. As soon as he left, Lea slipped away from her "guards" in the confusion and went searching for someone in the SWC to find out what her orders were.

She finally found one of her contacts moving cargo off an Araluen ship. She slipped up to him under the pretense of offering him some water. The man quickly filled her in on where most of the team, including Captain Dougal were heading. Her orders remained the same - stay with the Scotti. She was tempted to tell him to pass along a few words to Dougal about her assignment, but then thought better of it. The Captain didn't give a damn if one of his men (or women) didn't like their assignment and he didn't want to hear them wine about it. So she just nodded and went back to the Scotti encampment, wondering how she was going to be needed there now.
