Edwynus smiled as he cut a section of rope and disassebling the thinner ropes, weaving it through the two hammocks, he had learned well about the use of ropes from a old forester who taught him the trade. He applied that to his leather working, he remembered one Yule, he created a elaborate weaved deer skin chair set for his par..step-parents he corrected himself. As he worked he wondered how they were doing, it had been 2 years since seeing them. He glanced at Shanna and wondered if she would be recieved well by them. Then again.. him a ranger.. after all thats happened. they would be shocked. He deftly finished the weaving and tied it off. He dug out 2 of the tent poles using them to stiffen the new extended width of the double hammock.
He did feel a bit sore, he hadnt weaved in a while, it was a combination of a long day, the throwing exercises and the tossing of the ship. He stretched as he finished it up, then slipped into it, testing the wieght of the hammock, He adjusted the webbing a bit with a few thongs of leather. He then sat back a moment, resting his back.
He got up and gently examined Shannas Foot, It had swelled a little, but there wasnt any sign of anything dangerous, mostly soft tissue damage, it would be very painful. But it wouldnt need anything more serious then some pain relief and some bruise ointment. He rewrapped it. He noted that the crew had sounded a few short shrill blasts, and the call for lights out and into your bunks was called. It must be night for the crew.
Shanna was right. He would be sore tommorow. He took off his shirt, and layed down 2 of the supplied blankets to help cushion the hammocks webbing. "Its getting late. Its not a camp, or a forest, but it should be more comfortable then sleeping alone." Edwynus laid down, pulling his ranger cloak up and over him. It was such a lovely cloak.

Shanna let him tend to her ankle and his hands on her skin felt very soothing as he rubbed in the ointment. He had such a gentle touch and seemed to instinctively know where to press harder and where to ease up to avoid causing pain. She watched his face as he worked and thought he was very handsome.
When he finished with her foot, she moved her leg and told him to take his tunic off and sit down on the bench in front of her. She pulled out some of the ointment and began to work it into his shoulder and down his bicep and forearm of his throwing arm. She could feel the muscles already stiffening, so she massaged them until they grew loose again. She loved the feel of his skin under her fingers and marveled at his muscles. Her massaging grew slower and she leaned toward his back, her breath on the back of his neck. She wanted to kiss it, but knew neither of them was ready for that yet. Instead she said, “That should help.”
"It’s getting late. It’s not a camp, or a forest, but it should be more comfortable then sleeping alone."
Shanna pulled her hair out of its pony tail and stripped down to her under tunic and breeches and then crawled awkwardly into the hammock beside him, nearly upsetting them both onto the deck. “I hate these things.” She muttered and then settled down next to him adding her cloak on top of his. She settled into his shoulder and looked up into his eyes. Her hand rested on his chest and she stroked his collar bone. “I could get used to this, you know.” She said softly. She longed to kiss him, but she was still confused about her feelings for Ian, her feelings for Edwynus and how to balance a relationship with training him. She looked back down before he tried to kiss her and adjusted her leg so her ankle was resting on top of his shin, decreasing the pain.
“Good night Edwynus.” She said as her eyes began to droop, it had been a long day and she found herself drifting off to sleep in spite of the spite of the sensations his nearness brought. The swaying of the boat and gentle swing of the hammock lulled her to sleep.
…
She woke in the morning on her other side with Edwynus’ arm draped around her, his body pressed up against her back and her head cradled in his other arm. She leaned back into him slightly and began to stroke his bare forearm gently until he woke up.
“Morning,” She said, rolling onto her back in his arms so she could look at his face. “I guess your contraption here is a success!” She grinned up at him.

He slowly opened his eyes, and saw a pair of the most beautiful eyes greeting him inthe morning. He looked down at her as she turned slighty. He had noticed that she had positioned herself against him, in a most comfortable way through the night. He noted that they had slept quite comfortablely. Morning, she meowed. He gave her a quick squeeze and nuzzled her neck as he realized that they had to get up at some point. He noticed that Shanna was a bit disappointed as they sperated, the morning air was chilly on the water, and as thier feet touched the floor, he felt the familiar quezyness. He steadied the hammock for Shanna to get out aware that her injured foot might make it more difficult.
He quickly gathered his Saxe knives as well as a hatchet from his pack. Shanna had wanted to see him throw a ax.. so.. He slipped it into his belt. Then turned to give Shanna a little bit of privacy the room offered as she slipped her clothes on.
"How about we see what the Chef is cooking for breakfast." Edwynus shuffled through his pack, pulling a pair of anti-nausua leaves out, just in case. Chef was ready for them, with a meal of sausages, hot oats (with a large dallop of honeycomb in Shannas) and another orange, sliced in half. Edwynus carried his tray to the table. The crew there looked at him and looked at her, as Shanna approached.
"Good Morning Gents." He raised a tankard to them. He pulled his ranger cloak close to him as not to get it in his hot oats. He grinned at Shanna, who seemed to be enjoying the small chunk of honeycomb that sweeted her meal. They finished their meal in silence as they had a few items planned that day.
Down in the hold, Shanna set up cloth targets, whiel Edwynus stretched his sore shoulder warming up a bit. He hefted the hatchet, and when Shanna was clear and sitting a crate, he stepped back and slump!, pinned a cloth from a hanging target onto a cieling rafter. He smiled at Shanna proud of his ax skills, He had pinned many of squarrils like that and won a few coins as well at fairs. He wondered when the next fair he would see was.
He listened through the day as Shanna instructed him, his aim improved as he absorbed the training, a few crew members came through and watched him as he threw the throwing knife, it was indeed lighter, and much easier to aim and control. By dinner he could at least hit a man sized target with the Saxe Ax, and hit a reasonable target at a distance with the throwing knife. He grinned at Shanna as she praised and tutored him, her eyes shinning at him, the entire day. Then the dinner bell rang out..

Shanna gave Edwynus a demonstration of how to rapidly throw at many targets, using up nearly all of her considerable arsenal of knives she kept on her person as she dodged and rolled, using the crates for cover and maneuvering into position to strike a target. Within the span of five minutes she “killed” 11 targets, taking time to retrieve and rethrow two of her knives. She enjoyed the exercise and repeated it two more times, randomly choosing the order in which she hit the targets.
“That is fun. I don’t get time to practice much anymore.” Shanna said, concealing her knives again. “You always need to keep honing your skills whenever you get the chance.” She limped to the crate again. “I probably shouldn’t have put my ankle through that though,” She sighed. “Ah well, let’s go get dinner.”
Shanna had brought along her harp in its case this time and she ate quickly and then brought out the harp and tuned the strings while many of the sailors were still eating. She launched into an old ballad, The Black Velvet Band, about a young man led astray by a woman with her hair tied up with a black velvet band.
She moved around the galley, flirting slightly with the sailors, trying to win them all over and get them to relax around her. But for the more seductive parts of the song, she made sure she was looking at Edwynus. She finished up with the chorus;
“Her eyes they shown like the diamonds! You’d think she was Queen of the land! And her hair hung over her shoulder, Tied up with a black velvet band.”
Several of the sailors clapped and hooted, enjoying the entertainment. So Shanna segued into a bawdy song about a woman who lived in a sea port town and had a series of lovers from different ships. It was rollicking song that was normally a favorite in the seedier pubs and taverns. The sailors loved it and sang along on the male parts.
Shanna sang one more song and then the quartermaster came down and ordered the men to their posts. The sun had set and the waters were fairly calm. The ship was making good time and Shanna was halfway hoping the voyage would last a bit longer than normal. It was a nice break and it would give her and Edwynus a chance to sort out their feelings.
Back in the cabin she pulled out her embroidery for a while again. She watched Edwynus, wondering what project he was going to pull out to work on this evening. She hummed softly as she counted the threads. She was simply enjoying his company and remembering how nice it had been to wake up in the shelter of his arms. She was even beginning to forget that he was so much younger than she.

The dinner went well, He could tell that many of the sailors enjoyed the songs. Edwynus felt relaxed when Shanna sung, she had a real talent for relaxing crowds, not just with her music but her personality. With the quartermasters call, they returned to their private room. He eyed the hammock and eyed the bundle Shanna was pulling out. He decided that he would start his own project. He quickly went to the hold and retrieved one of the large sheets of leather that he had gotten from the leather shop. This would do nicely.
He returned to the hold passing by the galley for a small cup of desalinated water and a sponge. He returned, to find her humming still .It was hypnotic as he pulled out a few small tools from a pouch and his knife. He trimmed teh piece carefully seperating it, measuring, moistening one of the large pieces and with a dull tool, imbedded a crisp outline. It wouldnt be much, but they only had 6 more days aboard ship. And failing any emergancies, this would be something that Shanna could make use of. With the pieces trimmed and cut, he looked up at Shanna who was trying to figure out what he was crafting. He had been trying to hide the outline, this was going to be the hard part under her watchful eye.
He noted the 3rd shift bell had rung. It was certainly time to get some sleep. He looked at Shanna who seemed content with her embordary. He carefully, checked her foot again. This time he massaged a bit of bruise ointment on the worst parts. It was healing now. By the end of the trip, it might be mostly healed. That is if she stopped using it to show the techniques. He smiled at her as he looked up her leg to her chest to her eyes that gleamed ar him.
He stopped a moment and was going to say something. He wrapped Shanna foot comfortably. He looked up at Shanna as he knelt in front of her. "What is it about you that i find so aluring. Is it your deep eyes, your honesty? Maybe its your mystery, or your humor." Edwynus gently pulled away. He pulled his shirt off and layed down the two blankets serving to cushion them from the webbing. He noticed that Shanna wasnt as shy as she undid her hair, this time taking note that her undertunic curved in places that his eyes couldnt miss. He had been gentlemanly about it before, but her beauty was breathtaking. He helped her gently get into the hammock purposely counter balancing the bed, so she didnt have to stuggle as the night before.
Their eyes locked together as he pulled her under their cloaks, making them nearly invisible anyone that might walk in. He felt her stroke his cheek, as he gently caressed her hip. He breathed her fragence in as she put his head against his chest, both of their hearts were pounding away. They heard their breaths had quickened slightly. He tilted his head down to look into Shanna curled up in his arms, She looked up to his. He wish he knew how this things worked. He nervously tilted his head forward, feeling her warm breath on his skin. They were so close...

Shanna watched him doctor her foot and set her embroidery aside when his hands stopped caressing her sore ankle and he looked like he was going to say something. He looked embarrassed for a moment, though and then wrapped her ankle back up expertly. ‘He is going to give Rick a run for his money when it comes to herbs and tracking.’ She thought with admiration. Rick probably knew more about herbs than any of the other rangers – at least so far as she knew and Edwynus knew more from what she’d seen so far.
When he finished he looked up at her and asked her, "What is it about you that I find so alluring?” Shanna reached out to stroke his cheekbone with her thumb, but he pulled away before she could answer him.
She wasn’t sure if he was embarrassed or what, so she was a little surprised when he peeled off his shirt and climbed into the hammock. Her breath caught in her throat at the sight of his rippling muscles after he had been so close to her. It seemed he was inviting her closer. Was he ready to get involved? She didn’t want to rush things for his sake.
She pulled off her outer layers of clothing, watching him look at her the whole time and then she let down her hair and shook it out around her shoulders. She slid into the hammock, still a bit awkwardly but with much more ease than the previous night and snuggled up against him. She stroked his cheek then, as his eyes gleamed down at her. Her breath quickened and her heart skipped a beat when she felt him stroking her thigh through the lightweight peasant blouse.
He tipped his head down toward her, his eyes capturing hers and she saw the look of innocent nervousness in his eyes. She remembered how nervous she had been right before her first kiss, but she hadn’t had the choice that time. Right now she sensed Edwynus wanted to kiss her, but was apprehensive.
Shanna debated with herself for a moment on the wisdom of giving in to her feelings, but only for a moment. ‘What am I waiting for?’ She asked herself, ‘I want him, he wants me. Nothing else should matter.’
She smiled encouragingly at him and leaned up, her eyes going from his gorgeous brown eyes with the flecks of gold, to his firm lips. She tilted her head so their noses wouldn’t bump and as their lips met she closed her eyes to savor every sensation.
Her heart skipped a beat again and she felt tingles run right down her back and into the pit of her stomach. She pressed his lips with hers gently and lightly brushed her tongue across them as she ran her fingers up the nape of his neck and into his hair.
She didn’t want to stop, but knew he wasn’t ready for more than a few kisses right now. So she gently pulled back after what seemed like moments and yet hours at the same time. She moved her hand and rubbed his cheek bone with her thumb, and then brushed her thumb over his lips, looking from them up into his eyes to see what his reaction was. Her body pressed up against his and she thought they seemed to be made for each other, they way they fitted together so nicely.
She looked in his eyes and smiled, her own eyes full of love and contentment.

The kiss lasted a eternity. He almost forgot to breath. It was solid, firm, honest... loving. He pulled her close as she broke the long kiss. He laid his arm around her, and settled into the hammock, and in a few moments, they were asleep, satisfied as the night moved on, unaware of the two lovers drifting down a river in the world.
The next morning, Edwynus awoke to a sparkling pair of jewels, Shannas cheeks looked a little flushed as she gazed at him. Good Morning there. Edwynus smiled at her and gave her a small kiss on the cheek and bid her a good morning, the evening had been one he would remember for the rest of his life. "Shall we get started then?" Edwynus held the bed for her to ease herself off.
The boat was quiet today as the Shanna ran him through drill after drill. He had learned that Shanna was not a tough teacher, but she did expect results, and if you made a mistake. She was right there, gently correcting. He appreciated the lessons more that day. He spent some time during the breaks find himself considering their relationship, where it was going, the boundary that had been crossed the night before. He found himself, more relaxed now as she taught him, corrected him. Pushed him, not just as a teacher, but as someone that was sincerily concerned for his well being and pushing him to his point of excellence. Her teaching was spot on, correcting and reinforcing. After a hour of roll and throw drills, he finally had the Saxe Ax hitting the cloth. It would probably be a while before he achieved the skill of thowing multiple weapons at multiple targets.
As the evening approached, Edwynus and Shanna at their dinner, he noted that she and him could bearly take their eyes of each other, each of them beaming and grinning at each other with glances stolen. Shanna ended dinner with another round of sounds, much to the joy of the sailors, even the Captain had come down and enjoyed a song before returning to his post.
Edwynus left early to work on his project, He heard Shannas voice as it finished the ballad. He knew he didnt have alot of time before she would figure out what he was making. But he pressed and tapped away, as a image appeared, being stamped into the hide. He covered it slightly as Shanna entered the room. She grinned at him, before putting away her harp.
"Im working on a surprise, I think it will be enjoyable.. at least once its finished." He tilted the pieces of leather away, picking up a few other pieces and began preparing to stitch them together. By the time he was finished, Shanna had finished a few rows of her own embrodairy, and the 3rd shift sounded. He looked at Shanna. Putting away his materials, he carefully checked her wound. already the bruise was fading in some of the less damaged areas. She would be healed fully in another week or so.
Before he stood up, he looked up at her. "About last night." Edwynus started. " I have never been in love with anyone before... I hope i wasnt .. innappro..too forward. I realize the your duty bound as my master to be that on a certain level. But when we are here, alone. I want to see you as the woman you are. Beautiful, caring and loving." Finished bandaging, He took a moment to clean himself up. He slid into the hammock, waiting for Shanna to come into his arms.

Shanna watched Edwynus slip out of the galley while she was singing and wondered what he was up to. The room seemed empty and dreary after he left. She finished up the song and they talked her into doing just one more, this time the Captain stayed to listen and was singing along with the rest, thumping his mug on the tabletop to the beat of a tale of the life of a sailor and his conquests in each port. ‘If Mother ever heard me sing this song, she would tan my hide.’ Shanna thought as she launched into the chorus again of the very racy jingle.
When she entered the cabin, Edwynus was working a piece of leather. Shanna glanced at it curiously, but he moved to block her view and she smiled to herself as she put her harp away. She hadn’t shown him what she was working on either, and found it amusing they were trying to surprise each other while working on projects in such close proximity. Another night or two and it was going to get very interesting trying to hide them as the projects developed and came together.
They worked in companionable silence again for a while and then Edwynus put up his project and took a look at her ankle again. “It is not nearly so sore as it was yesterday. You are going to have to teach me how to make that bruise ointment.” She grinned, but noticed he seemed to be wrestling with some thought or emotion.
"About last night." Edwynus started. “I have never been in love with anyone before... I hope I wasn’t ... innappro-... too forward. I realize that you're duty bound as my master to be that on a certain level. But when we are here, alone, I want to see you as the woman you are.”
Shanna leaned forward and cupped his chin in her hand, “Of course you weren’t.” She smiled at him. “I have wanted that kiss from the very first night, back at the lake.” She remembered her favorite spot on the farm and how nice it had been to share that with him. “I agree. When we are alone, we are not ranger and apprentice, we are just two people getting to know each other and caring for one another.” She wasn’t quite ready to say she loved him yet, not knowing for sure if that is what she was feeling for him or if it was just infatuation. She thought it was much deeper, but if it wasn’t she didn’t want to string him along.
He got up and climbed into the hammock and waited for her. Shanna slipped out of her outer garments and slid into the hammock with him. This time she initiated the kiss, letting him complete it. They snuggled for a bit, kissing again, and then Shanna drifted off to sleep, thinking this hammock might just be the best place in the world.
She woke in the morning lying almost on her stomach with Edwynus half draped over her, his chin nestled against the back of her neck and one arm thrown over her, holding her protectively. His breath blew gently on the back of her neck and ear lobe and sent thrills up and down her spine. She felt him stir slightly and his even breathing changed subtly, telling her that he had just woken up.
She squirmed around under him until she was on her back and slipped her one arm under his and pulled him tight, burying her face in his neck and breathing deeply. He smelled of man and pine with a hint of leather. She loved the way he smelled.
She kissed his neck for a moment and worked her way down his jaw until their lips met again, her breath coming faster. After a moment or two though, she pulled back and grinned at him mischievously. “Time to get up, my dear! I have something different planned for you today!”
On the ship it would be difficult to practice archery and she knew he was already competent in that, so she would put that off until they were on the trail. She needed to know if he could defend himself though, if he were ever attacked.
After breakfast and checking on the horses she led him up onto the deck. She went to the bow and let the wind blow her hair back before plaiting it, taking in the smell of the sea. She loved sailing sometimes, but so many trips back and forth to Gallica lately was beginning to get tiring.
She found a relatively clear space in the foredeck out of the sailor’s way and pulled off her weapons, laying them gently on a cask of ale. She motioned for Edwynus to do the same. As soon as he finished and turned back toward her expectantly, she launched herself at him, trying to grapple him to the ground. Hoping to catch him off-balance, she placed her good ankle behind his and pushed with her arm across his chest, trying to trip him.
“You better not go easy on me, or you will pay for it in the long run!” She muttered in his ear, a devilish smile on her face as she tried to shove him over.

Edwynus saw her lunge at him, her cloak hiding her movement as He just started to raise his hands in defense, he felt her ankle pull his foot out, and herknee press against his knee, in a instant he was on the deck, with her standing over him. He shook his head as she reached down. He grabbed her arm as she reached to restrain him. using the advantage of his center now being lower then hers, he threw kick to knock her bad foot out from under her, in a effort to pull her off-balance, then down to the ground, and roll on top of her. It worked on a bear once.. of course he was also armed with a knife and the bear was already wounded severily.

Shanna winced as his leg contacted her sore one, but she had a feeling he might try that and was ready for him. She let him roll her over and rolled with him, using his momentum, and a thrust with her good foot, to push him on around and land on top of him again, but this time she managed to get a good grip on his wrist and had it twisted behind his back in a hold.
She was lying on top of him with her right hand and his left twisted underneath them, though she made sure not to put any weight on his arm because she didn’t want to dislocate it or anything. She had one knee planted on the deck between his legs and the other leg right across the top of his left leg to try to keep him pinned down. It was a precarious hold and she suspected he would get out of it easily, but if he didn’t she would know where to start training him at hand to hand.
She had chosen the deck so they would be in full view of the sailors just in case things began to look like they might get too intimate. The onlookers would put a damper on such complications before they got out of hand and keep them focused on training and combat skills.
Several of the sailors had stopped their work and Shanna could hear side bets being placed, most on Edwynus from what she could hear. ‘Typical sailors’ she thought, but then tuned them out to see what Edwynus would come up with to get out of the hold. She was betting he would try to flip her over his head.
She smiled at him again, trying to distract him. He would need to learn that people didn’t fight fair. She tried to lull him into a false sense of security.

Edwynus felt the roll shift and she reversed it, his arm pinned beneath them. With her knee planted between his legs he had only a few options. He could throw her.. or.. He chose option number two. He lifted his right leg swiftly shifting his wieght in a fient to throw her. He tossed his leg over her head cupping it in the crook and scissored her , thrusting his wieght to the right.. He heard a few sailors begin jeering. And Shanna was smiling at him.. He rolled his eyes and shut them. Trying to stay professional, and trying not to hurt Shanna any more then he was supposed to. Though.. as he felt the tightness on his arm... She wasnt pulling any punches, and definitly was in control.

Edwynus surprised her slightly by getting her in a scissor hold. Now they were matched and stuck. To get out his hold she was going to have to release her hold on him. She grinned at him, but noticed he was pressing pretty hard with his legs. Had she been a real opponent, he could probably choke her death with this hold, giving him the victory. Well, she couldn’t have that!
She let go of his wrist and moved her hand to his thigh and dug her thumb deep into his leg at the pressure point where the blood flows closest to the surface. She rolled her thumb in a bit and felt the tendon along there and pressed it hard. That should make his leg go numb temporarily and give her a chance to spring to her feet.
She waited for him to release her, gathering her self onto her left leg so she could leap up the moment he let her go.

Edwynus, jumped a minute as she released his wrist. He used his now free hand to steady himself, as she began to press on the tendon, one minute he was tightly holding her, the next, his leg went numb, He felt Shanna twist out, leaping to her feet, He laid on the floor a moment rubbing the sore tendon. He backed away slightly giving her some room before attempted to stand up. He was never one to initiate a fight, he remembered a old hunting rule. Let the animal make the first move, it will generally be its last.
He eyed Shanna as she waved for him to attack her. He raised his hands in a semi wrestlers stance, as if to figure out where to hold her should she try to jump on him again. He was a fair wrestler, but he wasnt prepared as he lunged at Shanna, who suddenly, wasnt there.!

Shanna jumped up and let Edwynus have a moment to regain his feet. She knew his leg was probably tingling from the lack of blood flow. He got up and seemed to be waiting for her to make the first move, but her ankle was throbbing again and so she decided to let him come to her. She motioned him forward, a teasing smile on her face.
He lunged at her and she danced around him, ducking under his arm. She spun around and grabbed him in a bear hug from behind, pinning his arms to his side. Shanna was strong, for a woman, but she suspected he was stronger. She normally wouldn’t even attempt this maneuver on anyone because she didn’t have quite the strength to keep a man in a bear hug like that. But she wanted to surprise him and so she lifted and for a moment his feet left the ground.
Her knees threatened to buckle under his weight, but she had proven that she could lift him if the need ever arose. She started to shake from the exertion and so set him back on his feet, but didn’t let him go. She was having great fun hugging him so tightly and she wanted to know if he knew how to break free. She had a big, goofy grin on her face which one of the sailors undoubtedly noticed since he was laughing at her. She winked at him in good fun as Edwynus’ feet hit the deck, and braced herself for whatever he might come up with next to get free.

a bear hug.. he saw her out the corner of her eye, then felt her arms around him, then her heft him.. But instead of throwing, him as he would have done, she let him down and maintained the bear hug. What was she thinking. She was half his size almost.. and he could feel he legs shaking. He decided he would impress her a bit. This wasnt something he would like to do but it was something he knew would get her attention. Rather then try to break the hold by brute force, as she might suspect. He anticipated that she would try to remain in the hold, so he fainted a few muscle attempts, flexing but not breaking the hold.. moving just until a crate on board was within leg distance.
Then He grabbed both of her arms tightly, and jumped into the air.. pushing himself against her, and using the crate as extra leverage to put his center of mass. Because he held her arms tightly, she would have a tough time letting go, and either had to support his wieght as he rolled over her shoulder, or she would collapse with him on top.. or so the plan goes... He hoped that he impressed her.. but.. he didnt want to hurt her... So he prepared himself to let go and land over her,, if she fell. and not fall on her.
