"No you are doing eet all wronga! Mon Dieu! Give me zat Phillip!"
The young man handed the fish hook and the line attached to it with the many hooks and cork floats to the older grizzled fisherman who was berating him.
"And geeve me zat smelt as well do you sink I have time to waste on your foolishness!
"Look Pa pa zere is a ship coming toward us! Oh Pa pa I have not seen one like that before except een port, eez zat why you brought us so far out to fish zis time?
"Mind your line Philip do not worry about ze ship, when zay come by us just wave and smile, do you understand?"
"Yes Pa pa but may I release ze bird when zay pass, may I?"
"Sacre on une pipe va! Tesse vous et ferme la buche! I will relees ze bird eef it is ze right ship and not before, but pray eet eez and zat we are the first to have seen eet and we will not have to fish for ze rest of the season!"
Philip reached down to below his father's thwart and stuck his fingers into the small wooden cage to try and stroke the pigeon inside it.
"Philip, Non touche pas! Ze ship passes smile and wave, smile and wave!"
The vessel with most of its canvas flying passed close enough to them to see the faces of the sailors in the rigging and on the poop deck where she was being steered. As they waved and smiled the grizzled old salt carefully read the name on the starboard side of the vessel.
"Zee Gray Lady, Philip hand me ze tube."
When the ship had gotten quite a ways away from them he carefully reached down and pulled the pigeon from the cage slipped the parchment into the tube on its leg and launched the bird skyward. It circled a moment and then took off like a shot toward the Gaulic coast.
"Fly Mon petite l'ouseaux! Philip mon fis, we are going to eat well zis winter!"
