Ector saluted Sir Kenyon, then listened grimly as the older man gave the run-down. A Scotti war band. Lovely.
Deciding not to comment as Katrina wheedled her former master into submission, he followed her as she hurried into the great hall to find her father.
The place that had once been at least somewhat orderly was now in uproar. Ector looked around for Alistair, and saw him hurrying up towards the two of them, peeved.
"Great," he snapped. "And I was looking forward to lunch." Ector shook his head in amusement.
"Katrina, Alistair. Alistair, Katrina," he introduced them hurriedly.
"Charmed," Alistair said.

"Likewise, I'm sure." Katrina answered. She glanced around the room and spotted her mother heading toward her, with her father in tow.
"If you two want to remain bachelors, I suggest you run for the hills before my parents get here." She nodded to the Duke and Duchess parting the crowd before them. "Mother never misses an opportunity to marry me off."
She turned away from the two knights and waited for her parents. Her mother grabbed her arm and spun her around before she could open her mouth. "I say Katrina, are you going to introduce us to your handsome young suitors here?"
"Mother!" Katrina exclaimed. "They are not my suitors. They are knights of the realm." she said and rolled her eyes at them. "This is Sir Ector Pendragon and his friend, Sir Alistair. Gentleman, my parents, the Duke and Duchess de Montgomery." She mouthed the words, 'I warned you!' behind her mother's back and then tuned her out for a minute as she grabbed her father's arm and asked him if she could go with the other knights.
After a brief discussion, in which she expertly wrapped her father around her little finger, he hurried off to tell Sir Kenyon that she could go - under the strict guideline that she would not be in any battles. Katrina turned back to her mother, having only half listened to her regaling the two men with Katrina’s virtues and pummeling them with questions about their families.
“Mother- Mother, stop it.” Katrina grabbed her elbow and steered her away. “We don’t have time for this Mother, the three of us have to leave, right now. The Scotti have attacked a village.” She gave her mother a hug and left her standing there mouthing protests. “Come on, before she gets her wind back.” Katrina said softly to Ector and Alistair, grabbing them both gently by the arms and steering them away from her mother.
She led them the back way through the castle to the stables which was much quicker than going out the front doors and around the castle, and they arrived just as the other knights were getting ready to mount up.
A couple of young pages came running up to Katrina carrying a pack, her cloak and several weapons. She hurried to saddle her horse, Ace, and tied the pack onto the back of the saddle over her bed roll which normally stayed attached to the saddle. She settled the weapons in their appropriate places, noting the scowl on Ken’s face as he watched her, and shook his head. The lead knights were already starting to move toward the castle gates as she hiked her skirt up and swung up into the saddle and took her place behind Sir Kenyon, her cloak covering her skirts that spread out over the large pack, bedroll and the horse’s rump.
She looked to see if Alistair and Ector were ready and smiled at them in excitement. This is what she needed. She had spent far too long brooding around the castle. She didn’t show any sign of the self-doubt that was creeping around the corners of her mind or the question of what if she went berserk again. For now she pushed the thoughts back and concentrated on a plan to get the villagers that had been taken prisoner back. She patted Ace’s neck as the white horse with black stockings and a black diamond on its forehead sidestepped and pranced, reflecting her rider’s mood.

"I wonder," Alistair whispered to Katrina and Ector. "If your mother would be so keen on me if she learned that I was a bastard."
"And not just in the general sense, either," Ector drawled. Alistair rolled his eyes.
"He thinks he's funny, but that's not the point-"
"You're right," Ector said tensely, pointing towards the horizon. "That warband rushing up at us right now is probably more important than Lady Katrina's marriage prospects."
"Obviously it's not to her mother," Alistair said defensively.

Katrina snorted at Ecror's first comment about Alisdair. "I am sure she would have a cow if she knew, but she was far more interested in the Red Dragon here." Katrina pointed to Ector, grinning at him with a Cheshire Cat grin.
Katrina looked toward the warband riding down on them and then laughed at Alistair's comment about her mother. "You have no idea!"She agreed with Alistair, and then drew her longsword. "I wonder if they are foolish enough to attack us?"
Katrina waited for the warband to draw nearer.

"Maybe it's just a 'hello' band?" Alistair asked nervously. Ector glanced at him reproachfully and Alistair sighed. "Just trying to be optimistic." He wrinkled his nose. "I hope they don't try and talk to us. I can never understand a word these people say." Again, Ector said nothing. "I mean, if this is some kind of diplomatic mission, I think we're all going to be up a creek without a paddle, if you get what I mean. These people are pretty much incomprehensible." Ector closed his eyes briefly and his hand closed, almost unconsciously, around the hilt of his sword. "And I definitely don't want to eat any of the food they hand out. Have you heard of haggis, Ector? Do you know what that is? It's basically a sheep's liver, cooked in a sheep's bladder!" Alistair babbled on while Ector glanced at Katrina and absolutely did NOT entertain a brief thought of strangling his friend where he stood.

Katrina tuned out their talkative friend as she watched the warband move into an attack position. She was a bit surprised that they would even think about attacking the Araluen band made mostly of knights. Sure they had more numbers, but they were wearing inferior armour and were not mounted. Even with the rough terrain, they were still at a disadvantage. At least to Katrina's way of thinking.
She watched Sir Kenyon and another older knight ride forward just a bit and stop, inviting the leader of the warband to parlay. She overheard some of the Scotti arguing angrily and caught the phrase, "they killed my sister and her family!" in Scotti and moved forward a bit to see if she could hear more.
"They think we have killed some of their kin." She said softly to Ector and Alistair. Some of them want to fight, some of them are advising against it.
Katrina glanced back at Kenyon and he gave the signal to form a line. They were going to charge into the Scotti warband. Katrina moved back and took up her place next to Ector. She pulled her sword and waited for the command to attack, all the time listening to the Scotti, what little she could hear of them anyway.
She glanced at Ector and grinned, "Get ready. I believe we are in for a good fight!" She pulled the cover off of her sheild to reveal her silver unicorn and waited calmly for the order to charge. Ace, her stallion, gathered his weight onto his hind end, catching her mood and readying himself for the moment she touched her heels to his side.
