Name: Riley Tolan (pronounced Too-laan)
Age: 15 --Just had a birthday.
Gender: Male
Profession: Ranger's Apprentice
Appearance:
Rye, as he is sometimes called, takes after his great-uncle Joshua, who used to be a Ranger, albit some years ago now. Like his uncle Josh, he has a short build, standing head and shoulders below the rest of his siblings. Being the oldest and yet also the shortest hasn't done much for his attitude.
He has a slightly stocky build and weighs 140 lbs, although he doesn't look it. It's pretty much muscle and bone. His skin is tanned from working outdoors in the elements, usually at his uncle's side. He has sandy, light brown hair that he rarely--if ever--combs, so it looks like an unruly mop of curls. It's always well-trimmed-- and usually clean, too-- thanks in kind to his mother, mostly, and some in part to his uncle. His eyes are a stormy grey-blue in color, and usually glimmering with resentment and/or anger.
His clothes are well-worn, being mostly hand-me-downs from his younger and taller siblings, and are any number of faded hues, being mostly grey, green, and brown, with the occasional yellow or blue. Although his clothes tend to be faded, they are in decent shape, all things considered, and rarely have patches in them. His ankle-high, soft leather boots are the newest articles of clothes he owns, thanks to the fact that he makes them himself-- with help from his uncle.
Personality:
Rye is a typical boy...except for the fact that:
*He is the oldest of six.
*He is the shortest of the six
*He is only half-brother to the other five-- who are all fully related to one another.
He refuses to aknowledge the fact that he's a runt and will fight anyone who says he is at the drop of a hat. He always seems to have a chip on his shoulder due to the three above facts, and is forever getting into trouble-- most particularly fighting.
Other folks would say that he's a perpetual grouch, always being in a bad attitude and surly with others. Only his uncle would say different, really. His uncle has a tendency to look past the outer facade and see the real person inside. Perhaps this is the reason why Riley and his uncle get along so well.
Despite having a hot head, Riley can exibit great control over his temperment, when he wishes. He also has a surprising amount of patience as well, depending on the circumstances. Of course, he also has the following qualites in heaping helpings too. Stubornness, kindness--although he usually buries it behind a gruff voice and attitude, tenacity and determination--which is sometimes mistaken for stubornness, and engenuity.
He is quite agile of limb, and has a sharp eye and ear. He is also intuitive. He is, at times, rash, and his tongue will run away from him-- thus proving true the phrase, "speaking before you think." But despite this tendency, Riley doesn't tell everything he knows... at least, not right away. He trusts his instincts and his good common sense with that. Riley isn't the most easily won-over kid in the country, but once he finally is, his loyalty is practically nigh-on unshakeable, and his faith in his friends abilities is quite solid.
History:
Riley's father died shortly before Riley's birth, and Riley's mother, Ann, remarried shortly thereafter to Albert Tulan. Riley's early childhood was relatively typical, with no sibling rivalry beyond that of whose toy was whose. But around the time he turned nine, the heat was turned up on high, and left there. Riley began getting into arguements and fistfights with the other village children and, soon thereafter, with his siblings. He would come home daily after an arguement or a fight and would then suffer through a scolding from his mother and then a lecture from his father.
About this time, Great uncle "Uncle" Joshua moved in with the family, and then things really became riotous. As a great-uncle, Josh appeared more like a grandfather to the children, and they were constantly competing with each other for his attention. But as time worn on, it quickly became evident that uncle Josh prefered spending time with Riley more than any of the others. This, instead of letting the pot simmer down, brought it to a boiling high.
Things got so bad, Riley started running away, only to be tracked down by Josh and talked into going back. After that, Riley simply started spending all the spare time he had, avoiding arguements by going out with his uncle or exploring through the woods by himself. But invariably, he always managed to get in some sort of a scrape around the close of the day.
It was his uncle's idea, for Riley to join the Rangers. Who knows how long he'd had that idea on the back burner for, but the last year, he'd started talking about the Rangers more and more. Once he convinced Riley, who was somewaht reluctent-- although he enjoyed hearing tales of Josh's days in the Rangers-- he set about convincing a certain Ranger he often talked with that it was a good idea, despite Riley's tendancy toward getting into a scrape every day.
