"Uh-huh. One thing, Ringulf." Simone said, as she pulled her old boots on and stood to her feet, dusting off the seat of her britches as she did so. "You still haven't explained about how you knew."
Ringulf had his back to her as she asked him the question. He stopped, looked up into the air then turned slowly to face her, quietly he looked deeply into her eyes and spoke.
"Simone...I bought that ring for you.
Garet Stanton and I both had feelings for you, I realized his were stronger and he was the better man for you, I was a no account wandering screw up of a ranger, he was my best friend...I don't think you even knew...he asked me to stand as his best man when the time was right...I gave him the ring with my blessing and my commitment to do as he wished.
The Norns have woven other fates for us, but I will honor my commitment to you both and I will avenge my friend. In the meantime I will do anything in my power to make sure you are alright. You are a big girl...you are a Ranger...you will overcome the recent events of your life, this is not charity it is caring, the gifts? They're from people who care. The job opportunity...now there I am just being selfish, I'm getting a first rate ranger at a warden's price and I don't have to do it all myself."
He turned to leave and to hide the expression on his face, Then he left her there.

"Simone...I bought that ring for you."
Simone's jaw dropped. "You what!"
"Garet Stanton and I both had feelings for you, I realized his were stronger and he was the better man for you, I was a no account wandering screw up of a ranger, he was my best friend...I don't think you even knew...he asked me to stand as his best man when the time was right...I gave him the ring with my blessing and my commitment to do as he wished."
Simone shook her head and tried to blink away the confusion that all but overwhelmed her at this revelation. "You......you....He told me he was going to ask you.....but...I didn't think he'd......." she trailed off still stunned.
He turned then to leave and to hide the expression on his face, Then he left her there.
Simone stood rooted to the spot, absolutely floored, as she watched his back disappear into the bitter cold and darkness. Ringulf had been in love with her? And she'd been to dense to notice...well, more like head-over-heels, blindly in love with Garret. Simone found herself shaking her head, trying to deny Ringulf's revelation. She knew she wouldn't be able to though--fact was fact, no matter how much she would like to erase it. "You gotta be kidding me." she said aloud to the empty air.
She turned back to the horses and picked up a brush and a rag and just went down the entire row, grooming every animal, no matter that they had already had one grooming already, trying to process what she had just learned. The grooming was theraputic at the least.
"Well, at any rate, he's the only one who knew." she told the horses as she worked over Chip's coat. He was the last, and his coat already had a nice shine to it. She paused mid-brush stroke, as a thought struck her. "Oh good grief, I just hope he never mentioned and never does mention anything to Crowley!" she told the spotted pony.
Though, as she thought about it, she figured that if Ringulf had, Crowley would definitely have said something about it by now.

Ringulf made his way back to the main cabin a funny lump in his throat which he swallowed hard and he rubbed away the sting of the cold in his eyes, it must have been the cold for they were tearing. He came back in and moved to the fire. Scanning the room he saw all having a good time and the new fellow Yule moving from place to place handing out little trinkets and telling stories. He saw Fin and went to her.
Moving up behind her he gave her a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek.
"I just wanted to let you know how happy I am that you are a part of my life!" He wispered in her ear.
The night was joyful and the cabin with so many people was cozy warm and friendly.
Ringulf wished it would always be so, but he knew that this could not be, the Ranger Corps demanded service and though there were evenings like this strewn throughout a career like a handfull of diamonds, the majority of the career were rocks and some coal.
