The rider jogged down the trail leading to the small clearing, letting the scarse moonlight to guide his path unerringly through the thin forest. Reaching the treeline, he halted, watched and gave a quiet chuckle. Nudging his horse forward agian, he rode silently up to the cabin that sat almost square in the middle of the clearing. Knowing his mentor, the location of the dwelling had given him fits when he first laid eyes on it...even if he had resided in it as an apprentice himself.
The rider now dismounted and moved to the door, pausing to listen for sound on the other side. When he heard nothing, the man proceeded to open the door. An authorative zzzzzzt-thud! caused the man to duck back around the corner as quickly as he could. With a lighthearted chuckle, the man spoke. "OK Qwade, I know it's you in there, so try not to shoot me this time as I'm coming through the door." He ducked in quickly, shuting the door behind him and lowering the cowl of his cloak as he turned to face his old mentor. "So, how are you liking the place so far?" he asked, without missing a beat.
Qwade stood by the fireplace, looking as though he had just rolled out of bed a moment ago, and slowly lowered his bow, relaxing slightly as he verified the identity of his late night guest. "Red. It was peaceful and quiet until a minute ago."
Red turned to extract Qwade's arrow from the door panel where it was lodged. "Ah well, you know, peace and quiet are overrated anyhow." With a grunt, he tugged the arrow free and walked toward Qwade, examining the shaft before handing it back over. "Besides," he continued, "We all know how much you love action. So how're you and Al doing?" he gave Qwade a sweet smile that morphed into a grin as Qwade looked on, expressionlessly.
Qwade leaned his bow against the fireplace and went about the business of making a pot of coffee, as they continued to converse. "So what are you up too--nothing good?"
Red tipped his head from one shoulder to the other in answer. "Oh, some good, some..." He trailed off, then looked up to see Qwade looking at him. "You know how it is."
"I do. Who all have you been annoying?"
"W-eellll..." He took a deep breath before going on. "There's--"
"I get it. The whole Corps."
Red was silent for a moment, considering his mentor's perception, then nodded ruefully. "Yeah."
"And let me guess--they chased you away."
"Well, yeah. Actually, I was doing something for Ben, but I got on Crowley's nerves too much and Ben had to come take over and send me off on a three day vacation while things cooled off a bit with Crowley. You know how it is--if he doesn't need me for anything, I'm an annoying pain in his rear."
"Yep. I know how it is." Qwade removed the coffee pot from the coals and carried it to the table, as Red went to the cupboard and brought out two tin mugs. Reaching for a third, he paused and looked over his shoulder at Qwade. "Is Al awake?"
"Dunno. If he is, he can join us. If he isn't, " Qwade turned to face his friend and gave him a stern look that brooked no arguement. "You are not going to wake him up."
Red gave him another sweet, I'm-totally-innocent, grin and pulled out the third mug. "No harm."
