“Don’t worry, I’m not handing you over to those brutes either way, but on the off chance it is true… well you understand I have to ask, right?”
Olivia looked up at him and gave him a smile, well at least her assumption had been correct that they wouldn't hand her over. And she understood that asking questions was part of his job. "Well Ranger Marcus I understand completely and I take no offense whatsoever. In fact I was just thinking much the same thing. I have no idea what he is talking about. Either I did steal something and then someone whacked me over the head to hard and I lost that memory, and if memory serves no one has come near me with a log or frying pan. Or he's lying because for some ridiculous reason he wants me as a hostage. In fact he's kind of stupid, he's a bandit why would I steal from him? That doesn't make sense."
"Can you think of any reason they might want to get their hands on you? Have you made any enemies that might try something like this?"
Olivia frowned at the question and sighed heavily. "I don't know for sure. As a diplomat I'm sure I've made some powerful people somewhere somehow very angry. The only thing is I have no clue as to who they are." A tone of frustration entered her voice and she gripped the handle of the coffee pot a little harder. "I can't think of anyone who would want me dead I'm as clueless as you as to how this whole situation even came about!"

Marcus snorted, “I have found that most bandits are rather dull-witted or have poor judgment. If they weren’t they likely wouldn’t end up as bandits in the first place. Isn’t that right Snarkin?” Marcus glanced at his miserable looking prisoner. “in his case,” Marcus gestured toward Snarkin, “I think he fits the latter group. He is rather quick-witted, but it sounds like he has made some poor choices along the way. I have to commend him for not getting hitched up with a gang like this however.” Marcus said to Olivia. “Perhaps all he needs is one good break to mend his ways.” With this statement, Marcus looked pointedly at Snarkin, hoping the man would get the hint. “I have always felt that throwing people in the dungeon was a waste of time, resources and human life. I think there are other far more useful ways to mend one’s bad behavior, don’t you My Lady?”
“Of course we can explore that after we deal with this current pickle barrel we find ourselves in.” Marc glanced out the window again, seeing some movement far off the corner of the cabin along the tree line. There definitely were a few more others out there. He ducked down under the window and moved over to the door to Tam’s room. “Cover the front, will ya Rolan?” He quickly ducked into the bedroom and shimmied up to the window and peered out. A short, scrawny looking man dressed in the greens of a forester was leaning against a tree trunk looking rather bored. He probably thought he was concealed, but to Marcus he was sticking out like a sore thumb.
“Well he’s not lying about having us surrounded,” Marc said as he ducked back into the main room. “Although they don’t look like much to handle,” he said disdainfully. He sat down across from Snarkin and stroked his chin in thought for a moment. ‘What to do?’ he considered his options. “Okay the way I see it, we can one; hand over Olivia to them and hope they keep their word. Personally that is not an option. It’s not happening. So, that brings us to two; we can try and fight out way out of her or draw them out of the trees and try to pick them off. Certainly that is a viable idea… or three; we can stall and wait them out hoping they grow bored or make a careless mistake and pick them off from the windows, then maybe slip past them after nightfall. Of course there is a fourth option too; we invite him in here to discuss terms.” Marcus’s eyes glowed in anticipation of the verbal fencing match. “That could be a lot of fun,” he laughed. “Anyone else have any ideas?”

Tessa glanced out the window, the sun was overhead. It was almost time for lunch in the ward. They would begin to worry if she wasn't there. They were used to her being late, but not by much. "Well," she said "I vote for the fourth option," she didn't care for the third at all, she would get in real big trouble at the ward for that. Two might be fine, the rangers were excellent shots. The first really wasn't an option, just as Marcus had said. She wondered what they would decide.

Olivia thought about it for a few moments. Inviting the criminals in might be a good idea, or a very very very bad idea. They could easily overpower them, and take her without any of the rangers consent. If it was just her and the rangers she would have jumped on the idea like a cat pounces on a mouse. But there was the safety of the girl, she was here to and Olivia didn't want anything to happen to her. She bit her lip, but talking to them seemed to be the only really good option. Besides the fact that they could take advantage of the opportunity and kill them all. She wouldn't put it past them. "The only thing is, how do we know they won't just take advantage of us, and kill us when we invite them in to talk. They are bandits after all. They aren't ones to follow good manners or the rules of a truce. They will ignore or apply both when it suits them. If we are all agreed on calling them or rather just one in here to talk. We need to come up with terms, terms that they can't ignore and have no choice BUT to follow." It would be difficult but they had no choice, the more she thought about it the more idea of talking to them appealed to her. She was not one for killing people needlessly. She grinned to herself besides if things went wrong it would give her a chance to get a little revenge for them attacking her. And what she hoped most of all, some answers.

Marcus winked at her, “well I was thinking of only inviting their leader in. If we have him as a hostage I am betting we can get the others to walk away, one way or another.” Marcus glanced out the window, “besides, that voice sounds familiar. I think I may know this man, though I can’t place him.”
He thought for a moment on Olivia’s suggestion. “Terms eh? Like what? I was just thinking to get him in here and ply him with questions and if he gives us any trouble, I have no qualms about sticking an arrow in him.” Marcus glanced at Snarkin to prove his point. “I don’t really expect him to accept the invitation though. He doesn’t strike me as being a fool. But it is worth a shot, I could be wrong about him.”
He turned to Tessa and saw she looked pretty scared and worried. “Don’t worry Bluebird, you will be fine. You just hang onto the poker there and if one of them comes at you, conk him on the head with it.”

"I'm not worried!" she said defensivly, even though she was a bit worried. But, she didn't want to look scared in front of a ranger. Nevertheless, she picked up the poker.

Olivia nodded and smacked her forehead, of course! How could she have thought other wise? "Of course of course good idea. I am very sorry but my brain is not with me today it seems." She apologized. "But still we need to be sure that the others don't trying anything so a mutual agreement should be arranged." She trailed off and stopped talking and smiled a little. "I'm sorry I'm talking to Two rangers who are both men. You must understand that I am a diplomat, fight tactics aren't really my forte. How about I just let you do all the planning and I'll just lend a hand." Olivia set the coffee pot down and unclasped her cloak she tossed it off to one side so that it was out of the way, then she brought out of her bag a long dark blue ribbon. This she put under her hair and pulled making a bow and effectively pulling her hair back from her face revealing some slight freckles on her cheeks and nose. Her dark blue eyes were alert and calm not betraying the nerves and fear she felt on the inside. She tossed her bag after her cloak where it was within reaching distance but wouldn't hinder her if it came to a fight.

"Do you want me to go hide in the bedroom again?" Tessa said a bit sarcastically. She didn't like missing the action, but she understood if the ranger's didn't want her getting hurt accidentally.

Marcus shook his head, “No, I think it better if you stay in here. It is possible they may try to rush the cabin and come in through one of the bedroom windows. I wouldn’t want you to be in there by yourself if they do.” Right after he said it, he realized he probably shouldn’t have brought that up in front of the girls. But it was too late and he blundered on, trying to make them believe he knew what to do, even though he wasn’t entirely sure of things himself. He was the ranger, though, and no matter how new at the job, they were looking to him to get them out of this. It didn’t help that he was highly distracted by how nicely the ribbon in Olivia’s hair matched her pretty eyes. ‘focus, Marc, you fool,’ he thought, ‘this is your time to play the hero and if you are lucky, maybe even win the girl.’
Marcus turned back to Tessa, “Besides, you are my backup, Bluebird! I am counting on you to cover me if they get past me.” He had been impressed with her handling the situation with Snarkin earlier and although he hoped it wouldn’t come to a fight inside the cabin, he wanted to see how she would handle this situation. She seemed to have the stuff needed to be a ranger from what he’d seen so far.
“Well, let’s just invite him and see what happens,” Marcus suggested. “I tend to come up with plans on the fly so-to-speak.” He smiled apologetically at Olivia. “Seems like every time I try to plan things out to the last detail everything falls apart and the whole plan turns out to be a dismal failure. I guess that means I am terrible at planning things.” He laughed sheepishly.
Marcus studied Snarkin for a bit and then reached down and gently helped him to his feet. “Look, I think this might be the same gang you tangled with earlier. I am betting you don’t want them to see you here with me, correct?” Marcus asked him as he guided him to Tam’s room. “Perhaps you had better keep watch on the back side of the cabin and holler if they rush the cabin and try to get in through the windows.” He leads Snarkin into the room and sets him up along the back wall. “Just don’t show your face in the window, they might have someone with a bow back here too.” He knew Snarkin would likely make a run for it, but he suspected if Snarkin did, justice would prevail. “Look, you can run and take your chances with those guys out there if you like. Personally I don’t think you stand much of a chance with them, but I can’t …” he let the sentence trail off, not sure what he wanted to say. “Anyway, if you stay here, I know of a place you can get a job earning 4 or 5 coppers a day. It isn’t much, but you can live off that much if you are frugal. I can take you down there tomorrow, assuming we survive this today. The job is at the mill down there on the southeast side of town beyond the piers. You ask for ole Alexander and tell him Ranger Marcus sent you. It will probably be a lot of moving bags of grain and flour around. Hard work, but if you have that job, you won’t need to steal from those that do work hard for their money.”
Then he left Snarkin on his own and went back to the front window, scanning the tree line again to try and spot any of their tormentors. He looked around the room, figuring they weren’t going to be any more ready than they were now. He called out the window to the leader of the outlaws.
“Okay, why don’t you come on in here and we will sit down and talk about it.” Marcus paused, “I am not handing the girl over to you, but if what you say is true, then we should be able to get to the bottom of this without any bloodshed.”

“Okay, why don’t you come on in here and we will sit down and talk about it.” Marcus paused, “I am not handing the girl over to you, but if what you say is true, then we should be able to get to the bottom of this without any bloodshed.”
The leader grinned to himself, ‘exactly as planned,’ he thought. He turned to the shorter man beside him and gave him a few instructions and then moved to step out of the trees. “I am coming up, don’t shoot!” he called out to Marcus and then eased out of his cover of leaves and underbrush. He was watching the windows intently and ready to dive to the ground should he see an arrow tip.
Warily he approached the cabin, trying to get a glimpse of those inside and where they might be located behind the solid oak door. He stepped up onto the porch and paused, seeing one man watching him through the window, though the large man was off to the side and back in the shadows. This is the one who had been silent through the whole exchange and the wild card that could very likely mess up the leader’s plans.
Then he glanced in the other direction through the other window and saw a teenage girl looking at the door. She held a poker and the leader grinned. ‘She’s got spunk. The Boss likes girls with some spirit. Maybe I’ll just kill both these men and we can take the girls back,’ he thought as he laid his hand on the door latch. He pushed the door open suddenly and then stepped back so if there was an arrow aimed at his guts, it would have missed. But upon glancing inside he realized that no one had their weapon trained on him.
Cautiously he stepped into the cabin, eyeing the young ranger before him and glancing furtively at the other man who was now nearly behind him on his left side. He then took a look at Olivia and couldn’t help the gleam that came into his eye. She was worth a pretty copper and he wasn’t going to let some know-it-all kid ranger mess that up. He quickly schooled his features to show no emotion, however, hoping they hadn’t noticed his lack of control.
Then he turned his attention back to the ranger, “Yer Greenriver’s former apprentice.” He moved around the room so he could glance into Rick’s bedroom, but the door was closed too far for him to see. For all he knew, there could be someone behind the door, so he placed his back against the wall. Now he could see everyone in the main room at least.
Marcus nodded, even though he’d said it as a statement of fact and not as a question. “That’s right and I think I am beginning to remember you too,” Marcus said thoughtfully. “Weren’t you locked up in the dungeon for several years for a series of petty theft crimes? Something about a knife fight as well, if I recall correctly,” Marcus mused. “Yes, what’s your name again?”
The slim man crossed his arms and leaned back against the wall as if unconcerned that he’d just entered the lion’s den of his own free will. He exuded an air of confidence and bravado. “Ahhh… what do names matter anyway?” he asked with a grin that left his eyes cold and hard. “They are so easily changed.”
“Point taken,” Marcus did not smile back but instead pulled a chair out and turned it around so the back was against the table. He straddled it and sat down resting his arms on the back. His bow in his left hand gently rested on the table. It would take him a split second to knock and fire should the need arise. “However I find it unpleasant to talk business without knowing what to call you.”
The bandit glanced at the other man who had made no move and hadn’t spoken but looked like a Highlander and a ranger mixed. He was sporting the cloak and the leader’s heart sank a little thinking he might have gotten himself in deeper than what he could handle. “Very well,” he turned his attention back to Marcus, “You can call me…Marrow, if you must call me something.”
“Excellent, Mr. Marrow, my name is Marcus and this lady here disputes your claim that she robbed you. Just exactly what is it that she is to have stolen?”
Marrow looked at Olivia, a hint of a smirk on his face that he was trying hard to suppress and said, “A small pouch of coins.” He figured the Courier would have a small pouch filled with coins on her person.
“Can you be more specific? What does the pouch look like? How many coins are in it?” Marcus asked dubiously.
The bandit shrugged, “Oh it’s a pouch just like any other. Nothing special, no markings, about the size of a fist,” he answered. “I don’t even know exactly how much I had in it, but she lifted it as we passed on the road. She bumped into me and right after that I realized it was gone.” He glowered at her.
Marcus raised an eyebrow at him, realizing he could be describing the pouch he carried himself. There was nothing there to identify the pouch specifically. “Surely you have a good idea of how much money you have?”
Marrow’s eyes narrowed as he flicked them back to the ranger. “I was just coming from the market and bought some things, so no; I am not sure exactly how much I had in it.” He said crossly. “Search her. I am sure it is still on her. Or better yet, let me search her,” he took a step toward Olivia, “I bet I will find it.”
Marcus moved the bow, raising the point of the arrow that had suddenly appeared on the string so the tip was pointed at Marrow’s chest. “I think not. She is a Noble and a Courier and will not be treated like a common street wench.”
Marrow appeared to be a little shaken by the appearance of the arrow, but he quickly recovered, and resumed his lounging against the wall. He shrugged, “You search her then. Since it’s obvious to everyone you want to get your hands on her goods anyway.”
Marcus glared at him, barely containing his anger. “No one is searching her. She has already said once that she stole nothing from you. I will put the question to her once again in your presence and the answer of a noblewoman should be sufficient.”
“As if noblemen and women don’t lie?” he asked sarcastically. “Hell no, it’s not sufficient. I want proof she doesn’t have my money.”
Ignoring him for the moment, Marcus turned to Olivia, “Did you take a pouch of coins from him?” Marcus didn’t believe it for a minute and wondered just what game the outlaw was playing. He wished he was up-to-date on the wanted posters, because he had a feeling Marrow was likely featured, but he had been out of Araluen fief too long to be certain.

I am sure it is still on her. Or better yet, let me search her,” he took a step toward Olivia, “I bet I will find it.”
Olivia tensed as he took a step toward her she swore if he came touched her she would hit him, again. If memory served her he was one she had hit in the knee. Nice to know it hadn't been a hard enough kick to cripple him. "Hit harder next time Livy." She thought to herself. She sighed and straightened her legs getting cramped from being in the same position for so long.
Ignoring him for the moment, Marcus turned to Olivia, “Did you take a pouch of coins from him?”
Olivia brought herself up to her full height and a look of indignation crossed her face. "Of course not! Besides if he would remember which obviously he will oh so conveniently forget he is the one who jumped out at me on the road." Olivia reached for her bag she knew she didn't have any money. She had left it at the inn hidden under a loose board just for this purpose. If someone did try to rob her they would find nothing of value in her bag. "But if it is his wish to have proof I will show him proof." She knew she was not being very diplomatic but she was tired, hungry, and getting frustrated. Besides the very nerve of the man to actually accuse HER a courier was infuriating especially since she was essentially an honest person. She was just very thankful she had taken the time to hide her message on her person, nobody was going to get it, not that the message was of great importance but she was sure the person didn't want a bandit to have it. She opened the bag walked to the table and dumped the contents on the table. An assortment of odd stuff spilled out and clattered onto the hard wood. She winced as a bottle of ink hit the table she was very glad it didn't break, two quills, three sticks of gold wax, a seal with the couriers emblem, an apple, her journal, an extra blue ribbon, some parchment paper, and a metal clip for her hair. All of this was spread out on the table with no money pouch of any kind in sight. She dropped the bag on the floor and crossed her arms. "There is your proof Mr. Marrow. Proof that I didn't steal anything." She stared at him wondering what his reaction was going to be to all of this, she made sure she was out of arms reach just in case he wanted to grab her and use her as a human shield.

"There is your proof Mr. Marrow. Proof that I didn't steal anything." She stared at him wondering what his reaction was going to be to all of this, she made sure she was out of arms reach just in case he wanted to grab her and use her as a human shield.
Marrow smirked at her as she grew angry, understanding why the young ranger was smitten with her. Her eyes flashed in a lovely way and her slightly flushed face was very becoming. Perhaps he could provoke her a bit more and thereby fluster the ranger at the same time. Just a few more minutes ought to do it.
He stepped up to the table, a bit too close for the ranger to use his bow and hoped the other one would be busy with those outside the cabin when the chaos erupted, and he studied the contents of her pouch. “Interesting trinkets you have there, ‘Lady’, especially this here book. Got any secrets about Lover Boy in there?” He slurred her title, making it sound as if he was insulting her and Marcus’s face grew red with anger. Marrow reached for the journal, intending to snatch it. If he didn’t end up with the courier, then the papers a courier was carrying might be worth a little something.
Marcus intercepted his hand, grabbing his wrist in an iron grip. “The only thief here is you, Marrow,” he said in a hard voice, squeezing the man’s wrist until his finger tips started to tingle. “You’ll not be touching the Lady’s belongings.”
Smack! Clatter! Ka-chunk, ka-chunk!
Marcus looked up at the strange sound on the roof. It was quickly followed by the same sound coming from the back and the horses were making sounds of panic.
“We’ll see about that, Lover Boy,” Marrow lunged at Marcus across the table, a long wicked knife in his hand.
At the same time there was a crashing sound from Rick’s room and the tramping of feet across the floor. Marcus could smell smoke and saw a tendril drifting up from under the kitchen the window. They were trying to set Rick’s cabin on fire. Marcus hoped that Rick had recently renewed his natural fire retardant on the roof and walls. As Marrow was tackling him to the floor he had a flashback of painting the eucalyptus and poplar leaf gel Rick had made all over the tiled roof and logs on the outside of the cabin. If Rick had reapplied the stuff in the last couple of months they wouldn’t have to worry too much about the cabin burning unless the thugs tossed a torch inside the cabin. Rick wouldn’t be at all happy to return to find his cabin and all of his belongings burnt to the ground.
As Marrow tried to pin Marcus to the floor, Marcus whistled, sending a command to his horse to attack and evade, but he had no time to worry about anyone else for Marrow pressed a cold blade to his throat. “Don’t even twitch, Lover Boy, or I will give you a permanent smile,” Marrow growled in his ear.
Marcus was lying on his back on the chair which tipped over and Marrow was lying across him, pinning him down. Their feet were still tangled up in the chair and the table, scattering some of Olivia’s belongings across the floor. Marcus kicked up with his knee, landing a severe blow to Marrow’s crotch.
The outlaw grunted in pain and started to slide to the side so Marcus pushed at him with one hand, holding the outlaw’s knife hand as he tried to roll the bandit over and gain the upper hand.
The door to Tam’s room burst open and two men ran into the room and tried to jump onto Roran, attempting to disarm him.
A voice rang out from outside the cabin, “Better come out, Ranger, or we’ll burn you out!” and was followed by a chuckle and then another clatter on the roof as another torch was thrown up there.

Olivia's anger was beginning to boil but she used her training and kept her face calm.. "No I do not." She was very glad when Marcus stopped for she was certain she would have tackled him herself if he had dared to even touch it.
“We’ll see about that, Lover Boy,” Marrow lunged at Marcus across the table, a long wicked knife in his hand.
Olivia eye grew wide. Was this day ever going to stop getting dangerous?! She was nearing her breaking point and that was never a good thing for the people who drove her to it. Her head snapped around at the loud noises. What on earth?
A voice rang out from outside the cabin, “Better come out, Ranger, or we’ll burn you out!” and was followed by a chuckle and then another clatter on the roof as another torch was thrown up there.
Olivia's eyes narrowed they were going to or were setting the cabin on fire! She took in the situation in a matter of seconds then she ran at Marrow and tackled him effectively freeing Marcus and shoving Marrow into the chair she had recently used by the door. She rolled a little bit as her momentum was still going she got to her feet a little painfully, Marrows elbow had slammed into her stomach and she had hit her head a little hard on the floor. "I told you we should have made a deal including all of the bandits!" She told Marcus ducking a sword swipe from one of the other bandits in the room. She ran across the room grabbed her coffee pot and went to the window that the man who had spoken was by she opened it. "Why hello there." he turned around at the voice. "wha-? AHHH!!!!!" he screeched in pain as the hot coffee hit him square in the face. Olivia looked at the empty pot. "Waste of good coffee." Then she turned back to the room to see if she could help.

Tessa looked around frantically at the scene. Tessa watched as the bandits flooded into the room. She lifted her poker and swung it at one of the thieves. She smiled at the ridiculous look on his face and smiled to herself.
She turned to another bandit and raised her weapon, about to hit him with it, when he launched himself at her. She cried out as she fell, pinned underneath him. She struggled and kicked at the man, but he seemed like he felt none of it. He pulled out a knife and smiled wickedly at her. Her eyes widened and he chuckled.
