Elliot and his new apprentice Cross were heading to Old Bob's ranch. Cross had been right, his horse wasn't fit for Rangerdom. Elliot had given Cross an alternative to keeping his first horse.
"As a Ranger, you'll be traveling a lot, it's hard to take care of a horse you wont always see, and I'm not to keen on letting people come and take care of him for you, but if you can find someone you can absolutely trust, I'll be fine with it. Now, there is another option. Old Bob is always looking for more breeding stock, I'm sure he would take your horse in while you take a proper ranger horse. He'll be well taken care of, I promise, and you can see him every once in a while. Old Bob doesn't love too far from our cabin, and he always comes to the gatherings, I'm sure he wouldn't mind bringing along your horse along with the horses meant for new rangers and those who've lost their horse." He had said before Cross had gone to retrieve his stuff from the ward.
Elliot had given him until they both left Old Bob to decide. Elliot knew that for Cross this was either a simple decision to not think twice about, or an overwhelming conundrum. Which? He didn't know, he didn't know Cross well enough to answer that. Then Elliot realized he had forgotten to answer one of Cross questions.
Elliot looked back at Cross while Terra kept on trotting forward. "I forgot to mention, you'll get your Bronze Leaf in two cases. One, the normal way, is for you to pass your first assessment at the gathering which is still a ways away. The other way has only been done a few times, and don't think you'll manage it because believe me it takes a lot to earn this. The other way is to prove one way or another you're worth being an apprentice. The last person to do it was Will Treaty, I'm sure you've heard of him, and he killed a Kalkara with his recurve bow... which I'll have to get you eventually. Either way, it's not really for me to decide." All of this was said in a rather delightful tone, even if the words he said didn't seem like it. He was a lot more friendly then he appeared in first encounters.
He then looked forward to see they were almost at Old Bobs, the smell of multiple horses in one place was prominent.

Cross listened as Elliot listed his options for the Wolf situation, Cross then went inside to the town, leaving himself to his thoughts. Cross looked at his new mentor. Even though he didn't show it, Elliot seemed to be happy most of the time. Cross though as Elliot made his first proposition. I am fine with leaving Wolf with old Bob... as long as he can handle the beast. Cross was worried that Wolf would not be cooperative with this legendary ranger horse breeder. Cross was also worried that his horse would not be happy. Cross grabbed his stuff from the ward, which was just a few extra arrows and his throwing knife. He then went off to meet with Elliot. He mounted Wolf and set his horse to a trot, going just behind Elliot's horse. After a few minutes of silence he spoke, " If Old Bob is up to the challenge, i am willing to leave him with my horse." Cross said aloud very randomly. He looked over at Elliot to see if the ranger heard him, but he wasn't to sure. Then he heard the other thing Elliot said. Either way, it's not really for me to decide." Dang it. He thought. That ranger gathering is almost a year away since they had just had one not too long ago. Cross let out a silent sigh as he weighed his options. I pro bally can't kill a Kalkara, and if i could, all know living ones are dead. What else can i do rather than wait a while. Then something snapped his mind from what Elliot said. "I'm sure you've heard of him, and he killed a Kalkara with his recurve bow... which I'll have to get you eventually." Cross pulled his reigns in, causing Wolf to stop abruptly. "I have to get a new bow? I have been practicing with my longbow since i was little, I'm a good shot with it too! And now your saying i have to get a new bow because I'm going to be an apprentice? Can i keep my sword, or do i have to get rid of that too?" Cross said, letting his anger take me over. "Look above you, see that leaf with the spider hanging from a web on it?" Cross said as he quickly knocked an arrow into his bow. He took aim quickly and let the arrow fly. It rushed through the air and cut the string, causing the spider to fall. The arrow continued and got stuck in the tree, it quivered rapidly with the impact. "If that isn't a well placed shot, than i don't know what the hell would be!" He muttered to himself, making it louder so Elliot could catch a few of the words he said. "I understand you guys can't make huge changes in your operation, but one apprentice with a longbow isn't going to kill." Cross finished as he started to calm down. I'm screwed. HE thought to himself. He sniffed in for a second and he convulsed as a putrid smell made it's way to his nostrils. Now how the heck can a single man live with that smell his whole life. He thought as he urged Wolf back into a trot so he could catch up with Elliot, who wasn't to far away.

"Cross the only reason I need to give you a recurve bow is for your formal assessments, when you're being compared with other rangers in your group they're going to want you to be all on equal ground. Though the change from longbow to recurve and vise versa isn't to bad, it's still good to get a good hang of it. Besides your longbow isn't as powered as a recurve bow, let alone a standard ranger's long bow, it'd be good to have a recurve to help transition you from draw weight. Though I wont ask you to only use the recurve, just practice with it once or twice a week if you insist on using your longbow." Elliot was being very lenient, if he was one of the older rangers, they would have been stingy about the rules, but Elliot decided to be a bit nicer to his first apprentice.
"Hmm, as for your sword, I'm sure our battlemaster will have a knight that could continue your training, and I'd be willing to give you up once or twice a week. I'm no swordsman so I could never help though. Not many rangers carry swords, you must know that, but if the sword training is getting in the way of you learning to be a Ranger than I will ask you to stop. Do you understand?"
As the two rounded a bend and saw Old Bob's ranch, Elliot called out to the old man who was reaching to the very bottom of the apple barrel.
"Hey Old Bob!" he said and the man jerked, hitting his head on the barrel.
"I do hope your not tryin to kill me ranger! What are ya 'ere for?"
"I've gotten myself an apprentice, and he will be needing a proper ranger horse."
"Yes, I spose he'll need that indeed." and old bob trotted off to where he kept his horses. Old Bob and Elliot spoke like old friends, though Elliot was far from old. Elliot had just liked Old Bob from the start, and found himself talking to the old guy whenever he could.
Old Bob rounded the corner leading 4 horses. All of them were shaggy and short, but obviously strong. The first and tallest, though only barely, was a black mare. The next was a brown coated stallion with darker spots. The third was a grey mare, and the last one was a dark reddish-brown stallion. Their personalities were just as different as the coats on their backs.
As they walked up, the black mare had her head held up high and proud, though it did little to make her look bigger. The second was looking around everywhere but at Cross, and most of all stared at the apple bucket. The grey had it's head down, almost shyly, but it's big curious eyes were focused on Cross. The last one... well he was simply walking forward towards Cross confidently, but normally.
"These young horses are for you to choose from young'un," Old Bob tossed an apple at Cross. "Give tha to the horse ya like the best, but you can't have the horse if it doesn't like ya. ranger horses are a whole 'nother breed, if they dislike you, they'll let ya know."

As Elliot explained his reasoning, Cross realized that the ranger was right. Cross was even more calm and accepted the fact. "I understand, i am fine with that now that i understand why." Cross said genuinely. Cross heard Elliot's words about the swords, but he did not respond. HE couldn't help but think that he had his sword as a gift and that if it meant being a ranger would take it away, he was weary. He simply nodded slowly. As they both rounded the bend, Cross was in awe. The place must have had at least 15 acres of land. So many horses where grazing and trotting around. Over by a bucket, there was a man reaching in. "Hey Old Bob!" Cross heard Elliot yell. The man jerked and Cross' mind wandered. I wonder if this man has a horse just for me... or do i get to choose? Cross wondered to himself as Elliot and Old Bob ed a conversation. Cross snapped back to attention as Old Bob addressed him. "These young horses are for you to choose from young'un," Old Bob tossed an apple at Cross. "Give tha to the horse ya like the best, but you can't have the horse if it doesn't like ya. ranger horses are a whole 'nother breed, if they dislike you, they'll let ya know." The man said as he led four different horses a few yards away from Cross. What if none of them like me and i look like a fool? Cross worried to himself. He looked up and saw two horses who seemed to have an interest in him. Oh, well that solves that. The horse that seemed to like Cross the most was a rust colored stallion. He walked towards Cross confidently. Cross decided he wanted this horse. Cross extended his hand towards the horse and the horse rushed over and chomped the apple in a few bites. That'a boy! Cross yelled in his mind. The horse shook it's mane with glee. "sir, i have chosen this horse." Cross said to Old Bob. "An' a fine young'un he is." Old Bob said. "This 'ere is Rancor. Ha, he should give ya a run for yer time." Old Bob said as he patted the horse. "Why don' you go up an' give him a lil' test run." Old Bob said with a crooked smile. Cross hopped onto the horse's back eagerly. He tried to urge the horse forward by leaning his wait, but the horse refused to budge. Cross then tried to dig his heels into Rancor's side, but again, the horse didn't move. Finally he yelled out. "MOVE!" The horse spurred into action, taking off at a gallop, and then stopping abruptly, sending Cross flying over his head. "Well, now what! The horse hates me!" Cross said with a wide eye. Old Bob was laughing very hard and Cross couldn't comprehend why. "Naw he doesn' hate ya, you need to tell em' the secret word." Old Bob said as he beckoned Cross to him. "Tell em' Olive Branch, that should git em' to be more friendly." Old Bob whispered quitely to Cross. Cross then whispered the words into Rancor's ears, and Rancor perked up, allowing Cross to ride him without a problem. "You only have to say it once in your whole life." Old Bob said. Cross was so happy as he dismounted. He handed another apple to Rancor and patted his horse gently. Cross then looked to his mentor expectantly.
