Age: 24 Gender: Female Profession: Ranger/Hero Appearance: She stands at 5' 6" and weighs about 99 lbs. She has blonde hair and pale blue eyes. She wears normal ranger clothes and weapons. (When in costume) Wears a Ranger Cloak, but does not carry the double scabbard or use her normal long bow and knives. Her cowl is up always, concealing her hair and she wears a mask that is wool, but looks like it fans out of the ends, which are normallycovered and a bandanna to cover her face. Personality: She is very shy. Albeit in her "Day outfit" she can and will talk if the situation calls for it. She is caring and loyal, and l, when needed, harsh. History: Sue was born to a family of farmers, and her mother died in childbirth. Her older sister got married off to a noble when Sue was 5, and after that she was beaten often. One night, when she was 7 her father was murdered, and she ran off, scared that the person would come for her. She lived in the forest, stealing money and food, until she tried to pickpocket a Ranger, who caught her and dragged her to his cabin. He noticed that Sue had talents, so he taught her for five years. She could move unseen and throw very good. When she was 17 Sue donned her hero costume for the first time, nearly getting caught by the watch.Ever since then she has donned the costume more times than she can count and plenty of rewards are on her head if she is caught alive. Additional Details: She has stolen from the rich and given to the poor, and gotten away with it-to the frustration of Crowley and the corps, as they cannot seem to find this 'Night Watchman' The name of her horse is Summer. She is a skilled martial artist, having taught herself.

This is a great start. I'd just like to see more details. Here are some questions to help you along. What type and style(s) of hair does she sport? What kind of mask is it—a wooden oval with eye holes or something else? Is she attractive or plain? Give us a physical description as if you were trying to point her out to us on the street. Does she have a lot of friends, or does she keep to herself? What character traits does she possess that allows her to excel at being a hero? What does she do as a hero, and why is she wanted by the law? What is the name of her Ranger horse? What talents did her mentor notice in her? Does she have any additional special skills?

I am not sure if Tandar ever saw the BBC Robinhood series but be careful here you are treading very close to plagiarizing the character. I would like to see you make this character different from Marion. I know she is cool and all kinda the Catwoman to Robinhood's Batman, but it takes a bit more creativity to base your character on another and write your own in it's place.

I understand fully. I have watch the BBC America version, and Sue's past is different from Marion' s. (I.e. Marion's father is the Old Sheriff who lives at Knighton Hall. Sue's father was a simple farmer. Marion never had a mentor, and Sue did.) I'm pretty sure that besides only being a spy for Robin, and that one episode were she helped the gang on an ambush, she didn't actually steal from people, like Sue does. (Not trying to get really sassy or anything.) I'm starting to get frustrated when I make my characters. I mean, I have no clue what I'm doin wrong, if I am. Please tell me?

You are doing just fine creating the characters and not doing anything wrong. Part of our job as staff is to help you and guide you, especially when you first find this site and start writing on it. We don't want you to run into any trouble with plagerism or copyright infringement and we like people to flesh out their characters - give them some depth and - well, character - so it will be easier for them to role-play as they write.
So the things you want to stay away from when you are making a character is number one: giving the character the same name as another fictional character from a book or movie. number two: copying a character's personality, appearance, or traits from a fictional character of a book or movie. Or giving them a title that is obviously from another work of fiction - like "catwoman".
For example: If you have a character in your mind, like Katness from the Hunger Games, and you create a character named Katla who is 16 or 17, tall, thin, brownish blond hair with blue eyes who is amazingly good with a bow, hunts and sells her game for food to feed her mother and sister and she lives in a hut in a mining town you are committing plagerism. Most of the things about that character are the same as the famous character from the Hunger Games movie. If someone can recognize the character that you got your ideas from, then you are probably not giving that character of yours enough traits to distinguish it and running the risk of getting in trouble with it.
Go read my character Lea Goldsmith. I did model her after a character in a TV show, but I think I gave her enough differences that most are not likely to think of Harper (or is it Parker?) from the series Leverage. There are some similarities between Lea and Harper, but not so many that it is obvious that i was thinking of Harper when I created Lea. (You can find her on the profiles board under the characters board - just look for thread called 'Brandwyn's Characters'. It is easier than looking back through all the creation pages to find her.)
So all we are saying, is just be mindful of it when you make your characters. And please don't be upset if we ask you to change something or explain something you put in your character creation. We are only trying to help and also trying to ensure this web site doesn't run into any trouble as far as copyright laws go.
also, there are some guides on the rules board that might help you in creating characters. Go take a look at them if you have not done so already.
Hope this helps.

I echo what Brandwyn is saying emphatically. You are not doing anything "wrong". In fact you are doing everything right! You are writing, you are learning and you are making choices. That is the whole point. Sometimes we can challenge you through our own experience to recognize defficiencies or possible problems that may arise from your choices, and help you steer a better course. Or help you tweek one thing or the other to make what you are doing even better.
In the final annalysis you will learn to be a better writer. I remember I had a horrible time when I first got here trying to understand what this envirement was all about, and the standards that had been established to further the site and its goals. for instance, I controled other peoples characters without knowing because I did not understand how to develop a two sided conversation with control of only one character. so I needed to learn when to break off the conversation or to supply dialog that would let the other writer interject their dialog into it. Not an easy concept.
The concept of using a template character to create your own is also not an easy one and requires some trial and error to develope. I have characters that are mixtures of the heroes or villains that I find most interesting but I try to mix them like an artist mixes colors on a palette to create a new color entirely, while still leaving enough of each to be able to detect the things that made them originally.
Beleive me, if we did not think you were a good writer with a tremendous amount of potential and creativity, we would most likely not spend the time and effort to correct you and explain as much as we are. Just like a Ranger and an Apprentice, the relationship is frought with correction and encouragement, but is sustained by commitment and trust. Trust that we want the best for you and the Forum and that we are commited to the betterment of both as we encourage and correct.
There is no personal judgement and never implied failure in what goes on here. We are ellated you chose to write with us and know that it takes a special calibur of individual to learn and grow. So take heart and enjoy the process.

Now that I have slept on it, (Turns out waiting to make a character till 11 o'clock at night gets you frustrated, lol) I want to apologize.
I just felt a little like I was being bombarded on all sides. (Please don't take it personally!) And that, yes, I appreciate the support and encouragement that you've given me so far.
I hope we can work on Sue a little, though,, since I have used the hero name in a thread and Don't think Kallie wants to change her posts. I'd like to keep the hero name.
I'm open to any suggestions that you may have to make her a little less like Marion of Knightonhall.
Thanks and I am really sorry. Can't wait to hear any suggestions!
