"Marcus? Are you all right?"
Marcus jumped at the sound of her voice. His head was in such a fog, he hadn’t heard anyone come in. He raised his head and turned to see a vision of loveliness walking over to him. He smiled at her warmly and held out his hand to clasp hers. “I am much better now,” he replied. He took in her perfectly plaited hair and pretty eyes. He noticed how the simple dress accented her perfectly proportioned figure. “You are absolutely beautiful this morning. You also look like you might be feeling better?” He asked and stifled a cough he could feel building in his lungs. His voice sounded strange to his own ears, probably because they were mostly plugged up from the head cold, or whatever it was he had.
“Other than feeling like all the King’s horses have dragged me around the castle three times, I feel fine,” Marcus tried to make light of his own condition, “Just a little headache. I’ll be fine.” A fit of coughing disproved his claim to good health. The cough rattled down deep in his chest and it was a few minutes before he could breathe again. The fit left him feeling weaker than before and he wasn’t sure he was going to make it back to the bed. He wasn’t about to let Olivia know how bad he was really feeling, however. Had he known just how bad he’d been the night before, he might have realized the reason he felt so terrible this morning, but he really didn’t have any idea. He figured his head was hurting from the pounding it had taken from the slavers. His ribs certainly reminded him of the incident. He realized he was clutching his side where the worst of the damage to his torso had been done and dropped his hand hastily.
“I think I might take it easy today, though,” he looked longingly at the bed again. Did he have enough strength to walk back to it? He wasn’t so sure. “You are not going to go running off on some diplomatic mission today, are you? I can tell you are still congested a bit yourself.”

He smiled at her warmly and held out his hand to clasp hers. Olivia smiled back at him and gave his hand a little squeeze. “I am much better now,” "I am very glad to hear that." She couldn't help the note of relief that crept into her voice.
“You are absolutely beautiful this morning. You also look like you might be feeling better?” Olivia blushed a little. "Thank you. Yes I am feeling much better."
“Other than feeling like all the King’s horses have dragged me around the castle three times, I feel fine,” Olivia gave him a doubtful look. He didn't look fine at all but she didn't think it was a good idea to point that out at the moment. Her brow crinkled in a look of concern as he coughed, he sounded awful, she wished there was something she could do for him. She handed him a mug of water. "Here drink this."
He realized he was clutching his side where the worst of the damage to his torso had been done and dropped his hand hastily. He should have known better, Olivia missed nothing, her frown deepened from concern to deep worry. She hesitated to say anything, she wasn't sure what she could say. She wasn't a doctor she didn't know how she could help him so she said nothing.
“I think I might take it easy today, though,” he looked longingly at the bed again. Did he have enough strength to walk back to it? He wasn’t so sure. “You are not going to go running off on some diplomatic mission today, are you? I can tell you are still congested a bit yourself.”
Olivia gave him a stern look. "You better take it easy." her expression softened a little and she shook her head. "No I'm not going to go running off I even dressed normally to help remove the temptation." she shrugged. "Its not so bad anymore." I'm more worried about you she added silently. She noticed that he kept looking at the bed, she could see that he was tired and weak. She glanced at the table and noticed that he had eaten. "All right I think it's time you went back to bed." She gently put one of his arms around her neck and surprisingly for one of her small stature lifted him from his chair and helped him to his bed. Once he was sitting she gently pushed him back grabbed his legs and lifted them onto the bed then she took the blankets and covered him with them. "There now go to sleep, you'll feel better for it." she stroked his forehead pushing some of his hair out of his eyes. "I will be back to check on you in a little bit I promise. Don't worry about Spirit I'm going down to check on him right now." She pressed a kiss to her fingers then pressed her fingers on his forehead gave his shoulder a little squeeze and left the room so that he could sleep. She put her shoes on and went down to the stable to check on the horses.

"All right I think it's time you went back to bed." She gently put one of his arms around her neck and surprisingly for one of her small stature lifted him from his chair and helped him to his bed.
Marcus was grateful for her help, but embarrassed that he needed it. It was an even bigger blow to his ego when she lifted his legs onto the bed. "Hey! I am not totally helpless you know!" he pouted, half joking. But she pushed him back and covered him with the blankets. He was going to protest further, to prove he was a man, but another coughing fit wracked his body and when it was over he sank back into the pillow weakly. The coughing was making a sharp stabbing pain in his side where he'd been kicked by the slaver the other night. He let Olivia tuck him in and smiled at her, "well, maybe I am totally helpless...I could get used to this kind of treatment."
Marcus kissed her fingers and followed her movements with his eyes as she left. He knew she was worried about him and he hadn't fooled her for a minute, but that didn't stop him from trying to appear stronger than he currently felt. He didn't want her to worry for him. He knew he would be fine. All he needed was a couple of days of rest and he would be good as new.
Or so he believed.
...
Until the doctor paid him a visit an hour later.
"A week?!?" Marcus exclaimed and then winced as the rib that had betrayed him protested the sudden movement. There was no way he was going to lay around in bed for a whole week.
"Yes, Master Ranger, a whole week," the doctor calmly answered as he put away his equipment into his bag. Marcus' ribs were tightly bound and he had prepared a bitter tasting tea. "That rib is cracked and you know it. If you go riding around before its properly healed, you might fully break it and poke the end through your lung. Then you wan't be riding at all - permanently." He handed the mug to Marcus. "Now drink this."
Marcus glared at the mug. "I'm not drinking that. I saw what you put in it." The draught would have him sleeping for hours.
"Suit yourself, but that's all I have for the pain and it will take you twice as long to heal without it." The doctor turned to go.
Marcus reluctantly took the cup. "At least put some honey in it. It smells bad enough to gag a goat!"
"That's how you know it's medicine," the doctor answered. "That's how you know it's medicine," Marcus muttered at the same time. "You're hopeless!" he eyed the brew in his cup distastefully.
"Cheers!" The doctor chuckled and left the room.
Marcus took a sip and shuddered, making a sour face, "this stuff is hideious!" He sat the cup on the floor next to his bed. Maybe he would drink it later.

"well, maybe I am totally helpless...I could get used to this kind of treatment."
The made a show of rolling her eyes to heaven in exasperation but said nothing. A tiny barely noticeable smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Just shut up and sleep."
The horses were doing well, she made sure to thoroughly check on spirit. He seemed to be coming along well in spite of his injury he gave her a warm nuzzle by way of greeting then looked at the door, Olivia smiled. "You ranger horses really are smart. Marcus isn't coming." she told the horse, getting an odd look from one of the visitors to the castle as he put his horse away. "I put him to bed, he's sick and in pain, well in more pain than he would care to admit." Sea Spirit gave a horsey snort right then. "I know I know he' sot stubborn for his own good." the horse gave her a look then. "Hey don't look at me like that, I'm not your owner Marcus is so you can't look at me with reproach. Besides stubbornness is more becoming in me that him." she said firmly, Spirit tossed his head and went back to eating his hay. Olivia smiled and went to check on Mara, she was in much higher spirits today and gave Olivia a long nuzzle. "I've missed you to. Life has just been plain old crazy hasn't it?" she stroked Mara's neck and closed her eyes trying to imagine a time when her life wasn't filled with so much stress. She couldn't remember the last time she had had a vacation or just sat down and relaxed she sighed. "Maybe everyone is right Mara, maybe i do work to hard." her nose twitched and she sneezed several times. " I beg your pardon, must be all the hay and dust and stuff." she apologized to Mara. She gave her horse a little kiss on the nose then went back to the castle. She wandered the corridors wondering what there was that she could do. She felt restless so reading a book was out. She didn't have any letters that needed to be writing. Mara was still regaining strength so a ride was out of the question. May she should take a nap after all she was still sick. She went to her room and took off her socks and shoes then laid down on the bed to take a little nap. She tossed one way, then the other, she laid on her stomach, put her head under the pillow and stuck one leg out of the covers. After five more minutes she gave up, she put the bed back together and sighed heavily. "Now I know why I work so much, relaxing is so boring." she went to the window and looked out at the bustling town, people going here and there on, she could hear the pounding of the blacksmiths hammer somewhere in the village. She desperately needed something to do.
------------------
It was by chance that Olivia caught the tail end of the conversation between the doctor and Marcus.
Marcus took a sip and shuddered, making a sour face, "this stuff is hideious!" He sat the cup on the floor next to his bed. Maybe he would drink it later.
Olivia smiled and closed her door crossing the hallway to his room, she had finally found something to do! She stood in the door way her arms crossed over her chest and looked at Marcus sternly.
"I don't care if it is hideous Marcus you will drink it. ALL of it." she strode into the room picked up the mug of tea and put it in his hand. She stood there and waited for him to drink it hands going to her hips. Her expression determined. He was going to get better if it was the last thing she did!

Marcus heard a noise at the door and looked up. He started to smile when he saw Olivia crossing the hallway to his room. But his face fell as she stood in the door way her arms crossed over her chest and looked at Marcus sternly.
"I don't care if it is hideous Marcus you will drink it. ALL of it." she strode into the room picked up the mug of tea and put it in his hand.
Marcus stared blankly at the cup for a moment as she stood there and waited for him to drink it hands going to her hips. Her expression determined.
He glared back at her, just as determined he wasn’t going to drink the medicine. He set the cup back on the floor and crossed his arms over his chest. –And winced as he touched the broken rib. His glare slipped a little, along with his determination.
“That stuff is just for pain, and it doesn’t hurt that bad – at least not bad enough to warrant drinking that foul concoction,” Marcus eyed the cup on the floor with aversion. “He could have put honey or mint or even lemon juice in it to kill the taste of the fennel.” He sulked, “I hate that stuff.”
He made no attempt to drink the brew and just stared back at Olivia as if he were a five year old battling wills with his mother. It was quite childish and in the back of his mind he realized how silly he was being, but for some reason he couldn’t help himself.

"I don't care what's in it or why you hate it. You will drink it regardless if I have to sit on you and force it down your throat." she bent over and held the cup out to him. "Drink it." she ordered. "Unless of course you don't want to get better and all you really want to do is sit there and be injured for goodness knows how many weeks. Sitting there in pain not able to sleep, tired so sick of being in bed. But not able to get up cause you didn't do what the doctor said. Well if that is the way you want it I guess I will leave you to suffer alone." she set the mug down and turned her back on him preparing to go out the door.

Marcus inhaled to make a reply but was seized by a coughing fit. His body shook as he coughed and coughed and each exhalation felt like a sword stabbing into his side. Tears sprang to his eyes from half choking and from the pain.
‘Okay, so maybe the Doc isn’t a complete imbecile and Olivia has a point,’ he thought as he finally stopped trying to hack up a lung and lay back against his pillows, completely spent. For a bit he didn’t dare inhale and his ribs were screaming in agony. He carefully took in a breath and the pain was obvious by the way he slowly let it back out again. ‘Nothing like pain to motivate you,’ he thought again and tried to reach for the cup of vile brew.
“Perhaps you have a point,” he said weakly, trying not to move as he groped for the cup on the floor next to his bed. “I will drink if you agree to stay with me until I fall asleep and not leave on some mission before I wake up…” He looked at the cup with distaste again, “and could you maybe put a glob of honey in it for me? Plleeaase?” He wheedled and looked up at her with puppy dog eyes.
“Will you sit with me and tell me about something from your childhood that made you happy?” He asked, his breath rattled a bit in his chest and his voice was much weaker than normal.

His body shook as he coughed and coughed and each exhalation felt like a sword stabbing into his side. Tears sprang to his eyes from half choking and from the pain. Olivia bit her lip she hated hearing how bad he sounded it made her heart squeeze a little. She relaxed a little when it subsided.
She turned around and smiled at him how on earth could she say no to that face? "Of course." she said answering all of his questions at once. She went over to the table, got some honey then put it in the medicine and stirred it up for him then gave it back. "There, now drink." she told him gently. She pulled up a chair and sat next to his bedside, she took her hand and stroked his forehead much like a mother would do with a child. But she couldn't help it, it always made her feel better when someone did the same to her. "Let's see, I used to love coming into town and looking at all the pretty fabrics at the store. Or going with mother on market day and seeing all the vendors. When I needed a new dress mother would let me pick out what color I wanted for it then I stopped growing and had to keep the same dress until it got holes in it." she smiled and laughed a little. Did he feel warm? She thought he felt a little warmer than he should but maybe she was just imagining things. As she looked at him she couldn't help a slight frown of worry crease her brow, she loved him she really did she desperately wanted him to get better. If he was better all she'd have to worry about was him getting shot or stabbed on his job, that was bad enough she hated seeing him so sick it made her heart ache. Although she wished he was better just so she could kiss him again. Her cheeks grew warm with slight embarrassment at those thoughts as well as the memory of the kiss she'd given him when she had come to his rescue. She shouldn't have done that it hadn't of been lady like. But then again it had pretty much screamed her Olivia wasn't exactly very lady like. Well least ways not all the time. Though she usually was very soft spoken and reserved there was just something about Marcus that brought out that side in her.

He eyed the cup again and decided it was best to get it over with as quickly as possible. Perhaps if he couldn’t smell it, it wouldn’t taste so bad. He held his breath and chugged the entire contents in three gulps. He was wrong, the lack of smell didn’t make any difference and he gagged, nearly losing control as he fought his stomach. It would be singularly embarrassing to up-chuck in front of Olivia and he was determined not to do it, but he couldn’t stop himself from gagging on the medicine. It was far worse than he feared. “This stuff better be worth it,” he muttered, handing the cup back to Olivia as a shudder of revulsion shook his body and pain stabbed his side. He lay back against the pillows, half welcoming and half dreading the coming effects of the medicine.
She pulled up a chair and sat next to his bedside, she took her hand and stroked his forehead much like a mother would do with a child.
Marcus smiled at her, his eyes focused on hers as his body began to relax. Her fingers felt cool and soothing on his forehead.
"Let's see, I used to love coming into town and looking at all the pretty fabrics at the store. Or going with mother on market day and seeing all the vendors. When I needed a new dress mother would let me pick out what color I wanted for it then I stopped growing and had to keep the same dress until it got holes in it."
“I would get my brother’s hand-me-downs usually,” Marcus could picture Olivia as a little girl in a pretty blue dress. He wondered what colors she had picked. He felt himself starting to drift off. Already the pain in his side was subsiding to a slight ache, as long as he didn’t breathe hard. He felt a little warm under the covers and pushed the top cover off to the side of the rather narrow bed.
Fighting sleep as long as he could, he tried to picture Olivia in a ballgown at a fancy Court dinner. “You would be the prettiest Lady at the ball, especially in a long, blue satin dress that matches your eyes,” Marcus murmured. His head was getting fuzzy. The medicine was really kicking in now and he started to drift off. He fought it hard and reached up to stroke Olivia’s cheek. (Why did his hand feel like it was made of lead? He wondered.) “I would be a happy man to see you in a brand new dress whenever you desire one!” He grinned. “No holy dresses for my wife, except the one she’s married in!” He winked at her and chuckled. Pain stabbed his side and he winced, but the grin stayed on his face.
But the medicine was winning and he was having a hard time discerning if he’d actually said anything out loud, or if it was all in his befuddled mind. One thing he knew, he was rather warm and judging from the blush on Olivia’s face she was warm as well. And he was thirsty. “Where’s that glass of water?” He wondered. He groped around the floor with one hand searching for a mug. “It’s getting hot in here.”
He thought he had sat up and tossed the covers aside so he could get up and fetch a glass of cool water, but in reality he hadn’t done more than kick the covers to the side. His legs and arms were too heavy to lift. His eyes closed. Marcus forced them back open again. Where’s Olivia? He started to panic and then his eyes caught site of h er and he calmed down. She was there, right beside him. Finally he drifted off to sleep and his temperature continued to rise. Soon he was sweating and then he was shivering. Sweating again and then cold and shivering and so it went on through the day.

“You would be the prettiest Lady at the ball, especially in a long, blue satin dress that matches your eyes,”
She raised an eyebrow at him wondering where on earth that had come from. The corner of her mouth quirked up in a small smile. "Why thank you."
“I would be a happy man to see you in a brand new dress whenever you desire one!” He grinned. “No holy dresses for my wife, except the one she’s married in!” He winked at her and chuckled. Pain stabbed his side and he winced, but the grin stayed on his face.
"Oh goodness gracious just go to sleep you silly man!" she told him she couldn't help but laugh quietly at him. The medicine was definitely kicking in now she could tell. Perhaps some of his words were not his own.
Finally he drifted off to sleep and his temperature continued to rise. Soon he was sweating and then he was shivering. Sweating again and then cold and shivering and so it went on through the day.
She was glad that he was finally sleeping. He needed the rest, though he felt a little warmer than he ought to be. She sighed, when was all this fever and colds going to end?! She was sick of it! She sat calmly in her chair stroking his forehead until she was sure he wouldn't stir for sometime. She softly kissed his warm brow and left the room. She came back a few minutes later with a book she sat back down in her chair and placed a hand on his forehead it felt warmer than before, she tried not to worry and worrying would get her no where. She sighed and instead got a bowl of cool water and cloth ready to use if she felt his temperature rise anymore. That settled she sat back in her chair opened her book and began to read, it was hard to concentrate but she did it anyway. She needed the distraction, every so often she would check on Marcus. Finally she gave up on the book and attended to Marcus, putting a cool cloth on his brow and humming softly.

Marcus drifted in and out of dreams where he was sliding down a large blue satin ribbon and angels were humming in the background to one of being plunged into a lake of hot water and then standing in the middle of a barren desert. Slowly he made his way back to conciousness and then the reality of pain.
Around an hour or so after the sun set Marcus woke up and immediately looked for Olivia. "Time?..." He croaked. His mouth was parched and had a foul taste on the back side of his tongue. "How long have I been asleep?" he finally managed to ask. He coughed for a minute or so and finally took in a slow breath that rattled deep in his lungs.
It seemed he was just in time for the doctor to show up and concoct another hideious potion. "Before you pour that...cough, cough, cough, ... vile stuff down my throat... cough... could I have a few sips of some hot soup?" He didn't know why, but he felt hungry. Before he'd had to force himself to eat, but now he was craving his mother's chicken vegetable soup. She always made it wehn he was sick and it usually made him feel better.
"It's very warm in here, isn't it?" He still felt hot, but he had to admit that the nasty brew from the doc had helped clear out his head a little bit. It seemed his nose was less stuffy but now his lungs were worse. Coughing still brought tears to his eyes as well from the broken rib. In fact that was likely what had woken him.
"I think about three more doses of this brew ought to get you over the cold and well on your way to mending those ribs," the Doc said as he handed Marcus another mug of tea that smelled like Marcus's two day old socks covered in swamp mud. He remembered the taste was worse. "You need sleep, My Boy! And I know how you rangers, and couriers," he winked at Olivia, "tend to shirk your rest, even when you are sick. So this ought to slow you down enough to give your body a chance to heal itself."
Marcus started to protest, but then looked at Olivia and sighed in defeat. He was about to drink the potion when a serving girl slipped into the room and deposited a tray of food on the table. Marcus eyed it eagerly.
"I had the cook prepare some dishes that should help you heal on the off-chance you were hungry," the Doc said. "Eat first and then drink that medicine. I will send an apprentice to check in on you every so often during the night."
When the doc left again Marcus pulled the covers back and swung his feet down onto the floor, intending to go the three short steps to the table, but he realized he was actually very weak and the movement of sitting up was terrible. "So much for that idea," he muttered and lay back again. "I hope there's some chicken soup on that tray." He felt guilty about imposing on Olivia, but without her, or someone, he wasn't going to be able to feed himself. "Liv? Would you mind terribly checking that tray for me?" He was worried she would think he expected her to wait on him hand and foot - partly because it would be so easy to fall into that routine if she let him. "I am sorry I am such a baby and burden on you right now." How would she ever put up with him for a couple more days of this?
***
Two days that Marcus mostly slept through, however, did a great deal to restoring him to health. His fever never got real bad, and the potions from the doc was causing the cold to burn itself out quickly. By the morning of the third day he was breathing easier, barely coughing and the only thing he had to contend with was a sharp pain in his side from the broken ribs any time he took a breath, shifted or coughed.
He woke up early that morning and for once Olivia wasn't in the room tending to him. He hoped she was sleeping, because he had no idea if she'd left his side or not during the past two days. Now that his nose was clear he could smell the stale air and his own sweat. "Ew! I need a bath!"
As if on cue, a serving girl knocked on the door lightly and Marcus told her to come in. He ordered a bath to be brought to his room, and the girl reluctangly obliged. He had a page posted outside to keep Olivia from coming in and finding him in a bath tub and to keep the Doc out too, because he took off his bandages to bathe.
He examined the nasty brusies over his rib cage that were starting to fade from deep purple back to a yellow-green. They looked a lot worse than they now felt, but he knoew they were bad. He didn't want Olivia to see them so he washed as quickly as he could and then managed to find a clean set of clothes in his ranger pack. Now he was ready to greet her.
He opened his door and asked the page, "The Courier Olivia hasn't left the castle yet, has she?" He could hardly blame her if she had needed to get back to work, but he hoped she wouldn't have left without seeing him first.
"I don't know, Sir" the page replied, "I can go find out for you though!" He scampered off down the hallway before Marcus could warn him not to wake her up if he found her sleeping.
He called the serving girl back and ordered breakfast. Now that he could breathe better he was starving. Marcus then found he was far weaker than he thought and plopped back down onto the clean sheets the girl had just put on it. He plumped his pillows up behind him and was mostly sitting up as he pondered what to do with his forced vacation. Hid mind drifted to the reason he was in this condition and he began to examine the problem from all angles. He was going to have to get after those slavers before the trail got cold. He sat there on the bed until the breakfast arrived and considered all his options.

"How long have I been asleep?" he finally managed to ask. He coughed for a minute or so and finally took in a slow breath that rattled deep in his lungs.
She only jumped a little not expecting to hear his voice. He sounded like he could use three glasses of water. She already had a cup of water waiting for him. "Its the evening, here." she took his hand and wrapped it around the cup. "Most of the day."
When the doc left again Marcus pulled the covers back and swung his feet down onto the floor, intending to go the three short steps to the table, but he realized he was actually very weak and the movement of sitting up was terrible. "So much for that idea," he muttered and lay back again. "I hope there's some chicken soup on that tray." She propped him up on pillows and shook her head. She handed him the bowl and laid a napkin on his lap. "Think nothing of it and eat your soup." she said with a smile and smoothed the hair off of his forehead. She hoped that he started to get better, he seemed better but sleepy. She tried not to watch him like a hawk as he ate his soup. When he was done she put the bowl on the table and put the blankets back over him tucking him in. She gave him a kiss on the forehead. "Go back to sleep darling. It will be good for you."
***
After that first initial day Olivia reluctantly left his side, really there was nothing else she could do. He mostly slept and as much as she loved and cared for him there was only so long she could stare at him before she began to go insane. Mara had made a full recovery and Spirit was healing very nicely as well. She received several letters pertaining to her arrival in Meric fief, after much thought she replied to when she would be there and sent the letters off. The second day Marcus slept Olivia gathered her things in preparation to leave the next afternoon. She checked on Marcus several times but slept in her own bed that night. She opened the door and poked her head in, she saw that Marcus was awake and sitting up in bed. She smiled and walked into the room. Her hair was down and hung in loose curls down her back, she smiled and her eyes lit up when she did so. She stopped at his bedside and took his hand and gave it a squeeze. She was wearing her white courier dress but no shoes. "Marcus! It's so good to see you awake how do you feel? You look so much better! Honest you do! Do you feel better? I am so happy to see the color back in your cheeks." she stopped herself from rambling on further. "Sorry didn't mean to ramble on so much." she was just so happy that he was awake she hoped that he really did feel better and that his ribs were on the mend. Now she was having second thoughts as to leaving. If he was awake and able to move then they were going to have to make sure that he didn't just take off. He still needed to rest while his bones mended, he might run the risk of re-breaking them if he wasn't careful.

Olivia opened the door and poked her head in, she saw that Marcus was awake and sitting up in bed. She smiled and walked into the room. Her hair was down and hung in loose curls down her back, she smiled and her eyes lit up when she did so. She stopped at his bedside and took his hand and gave it a squeeze. She was wearing her white courier dress but no shoes.
Marcus smiled back at her. He loved the way her smile animated her whole face. He noted the white uniform and felt a stab of jealousy that she was preparing to go back to work. He also noted she had the cutest toes.
"Marcus! It's so good to see you awake how do you feel? You look so much better! Honest you do! Do you feel better? I am so happy to see the color back in your cheeks." she stopped herself from rambling on further. "Sorry didn't mean to ramble on so much."
He let her ramble for a moment with a silly smile on his face. "That's okay, I love to listen to your voice." He gave her an intent, intimate look. "I think the worst is over," he answered. "It now only hurts when I breathe." He tried to chuckle but winced instead. "I suppose the Doc is going to be in here soon to gloat and give me another vile concoction, but really, I am feeling better." He was still weak from spending so much time in bed and not eating much for the last few days, but he wasn't about to tell her how weak he felt. Not unless it would keep her from running off to Meric and her career. 'No, that wouldn't be fair,' he thought.
The smile faded a bit from his face, "Looks like you are thinking about hitting the trail," he pointed to her outfit, "apparently barefooted." he winked at her and grinned. "Your toes are adorable, by the way." He flirted.
Marcus motioned for her to sit next to him on the edge of the bed, his face growing serious. "I want to be selfish and keep you here with me," He looked into her eyes. "But I know you need to get back to work. So do I, for that matter. Those slavers running that ring need to be stopped." He sighed and then winced as his rib moved. He glanced down at his bound side, "This rib is going to be a problem for a little while, however, so I think maybe I need to see if there is another ranger available who can work with me for a few weeks."
He took her hand in his, "I wish we could play hooky a couple of more days. Now that I am not feeling so horrible and you seem to be most of the way recovered from your cold." He looked at her entreatingly. "Would it be so bad to spend a day or so enjoying eachother's company? I hear Seacliff has some very romantic attractions." He grinned at her.

"That's okay, I love to listen to your voice." He gave her an intent, intimate look. "I think the worst is over," he answered. "It now only hurts when I breathe." He tried to chuckle but winced instead. She frowned with concern but didn't say anything "I suppose the Doc is going to be in here soon to gloat and give me another vile concoction, but really, I am feeling better." she smiled a little I am very glad to hear that.
The smile faded a bit from his face, "Looks like you are thinking about hitting the trail," he pointed to her outfit, "apparently barefooted." he winked at her and grinned. "Your toes are adorable, by the way." He flirted.
She blushed her cheeks turning a pretty shade of pink. She curled her toes up under her hem. "I suppose they are. I go barefoot all the time. Used to drive mother crazy."
[/b] Marcus motioned for her to sit next to him on the edge of the bed, [/b] she sat sat down careful not to move him to much with her weight. She could tell that his rib was still bothering him. [/b] his face growing serious. "I want to be selfish and keep you here with me," He looked into her eyes. "But I know you need to get back to work. So do I, for that matter. Those slavers running that ring need to be stopped." He sighed and then winced as his rib moved. "I want to be selfish to and stay with you. But I do have to get back to work. Merric feif is a disaster and none of the proper messages are being sent because its so disorganized. If it makes you feel any better I will probably be inside the castle all day everyday for the next year." she gave a disgusted look at the thought. She loved the outdoors, but with this new promotion she probably wasn't going to be able to go out into the field anymore. She would be inside doing paperwork, a very arduous and boring task. But well someone had to do it and if that someone was her well then so be it. "Maybe I could stop by the ranger cabin and ask him to come see you." she looked down at her lap. "Those poor people being carted around like that. It's ungodly and those men deserve harsh justice. The sooner the better."
She looked at him rolled her eyes in exasperation but a smile of deep affection came to her lips as she gazed into his face. "I think I may just be looking at the most romantic attraction seacliff has to offer." she winked at him feeling her heart beat a little faster. She didn't want to leave him but she did have a duty to this kingdom. She wanted to lean over and give him a kiss that he would remember for a very long time. But refrained from doing so in case she hurt him.

"I want to be selfish to and stay with you. But I do have to get back to work. Merric feif is a disaster and none of the proper messages are being sent because it’s so disorganized. If it makes you feel any better I will probably be inside the castle all day every day for the next year." she gave a disgusted look at the thought. She loved the outdoors, but with this new promotion she probably wasn't going to be able to go out into the field anymore. She would be inside doing paperwork, a very arduous and boring task. Marcus smiled mischievously, “well maybe I will just have to pop in and drag you off into the wilderness for some fresh air from time to time.” He grew somber at her next words however.
"Maybe I could stop by the ranger cabin and ask him to come see you." she looked down at her lap. "Those poor people being carted around like that. It's ungodly and those men deserve harsh justice. The sooner the better."
“That they do, I fear it’s not going to be that simple to bring them to justice, however,” he said ominously. “The one’s doing the kidnapping ought to be easy enough to catch, but those who are buying them will be the hard ones to track down.” He sighed and shifted slightly and turned his attention back to Olivia. "If Meric can spare their ranger... I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. I was thinking of checking with Heather over in Heatherwood Downs
He took her hand in his, "I wish we could play hooky a couple of more days. Now that I am not feeling so horrible and you seem to be most of the way recovered from your cold." It was his turn to blush and he dropped his head a little to hide the excitement he knew was in his eyes. When he looked up again, she had a look on her face that made him think she was going to kiss him, but something held her back. They gazed into eachother’s eyes for a moment, their hearts beating faster and breathing shallow. Marcus played with her fingers in his hand and then gently pulled her to him. He leaned towards her, hoping she wanted to kiss him as badly as he wanted to kiss her. He paused, mere inches from her face and looked into her eyes. He wasn’t going to force the issue. It would be up to her to choose the kiss or not. His heart beat even faster as he held his breath, waiting.
