Ok, I just googled the history of gunpowder and got the following: It originated in China in the 800's. (Current RA time is 640's), though Saltpetre was used for medicinal purposes as far back as the 1st century. It was not used in warfare as gunpowder until the 800's.
The earliest reference to cannons I saw was 1250 in a quick google search.
Weapons with gunpowder in the 800's were: flamethrowers, rockets, bombs and mines.
Firearms were not developed until the 1200's in Arabia according to most, though there is controversy about that. Some believe the Chinese developed them first. They used bamboo tubes with gunpowder for the first firearms.
Go google them if you want more details.

But if the worlds are of different times, and its said that he's based it off the medieval times or whatnot people've said, then would firearms be allowed? O.o?

On the other hand, Brandy, RA isn't set in our AD/CE 640, it's set in it's own era. Still, the Temujai or the Arridi might have developed gunpowder independently to Malcolm. They might even have gone for more powerful explosives, seeing as it was the Arab chemists who first made nitric acid, and it doesn't take much of an accident to discover that it can turn paper/linen into a high order explosive.

But in any of the books did he mention explosives like that?
I think we should keep in line with what guidelines the books set for us.
Or someone could contact John Flannigan and ask him! LOL
It is ultimately Tandar's call on the explosives thing. I wouldn't be opposed to smallish explosive types, but weapons of mass distruction would not be feasable or fitting the setting, I don't think.
