Profession: Freelance Warrior
Appearance:
Kurohi’s relatively slight build, at 5’7” and 145lbs, belies his true speed and strength. His Nihon-Jan descent is obvious from his tanned skin and straight, jet-black hair (which is always pulled back into a ponytail reaching just below his shoulders), and dark, almond-shaped eyes. He is always ready for battle, wearing lightweight black scale armor on his torso and black leather on his arms and legs, with a black hooded cloak over everything. The hood is often up, making his face hard to distinguish. He carries twin 24” Nihon-Jan swords crossed on his back.Personality:
Kurohi is sometimes said to have a split personality, but this is not entirely true. He has trained himself over time to be able to suppress all emotion at a moment’s notice, allowing him to fight without clouded judgment. He also uses this mask around new people until he trusts them. Despite these appearances, he is actually rather easygoing, and those he considers friends are like a second family to him. His father once told him, “it is better to die and have a comrade live, than to live at the cost of a comrade’s life,” and Kurohi took this lesson to heart and continues to live by it. He detests the Skandian practice of taking slaves from raids, and believes that such a fate is worse than any death.History:
Though he was born and raised in Araluen’s Redmont Fief, Kurohi’s ancestry is Nihon-Jan. After being shipwrecked on the Araluen coast, his parents made their way inland. His mother’s grace helped her find work as a dancer, while his father worked as a freelance bodyguard. Eventually, he realized is wife’s dance moves could be the foundation of a particularly deadly two-blade sword technique, and set about developing the style. When Kurohi was nine, he began training under his father to learn the style himself. Ten years later, he had not only learned it, but had helped his father refine and perfect it to the point where he finally bested his father, who then declared Kurohi’s training to be complete. He considered applying to join the military and becoming a knight, but decided in the end that the knights’ fighting style was incompatible with his own training, which required the mobility only found on foot with relatively light armor.Additional Information:
For a while he worked as a hired bodyguard, just as his father did, where he came to acquire an impressive reputation for effectiveness. Some people sought to hire him for assassinations, but he has always refused such work, saying that even though he must sometimes kill in his work as a bodyguard, he knows that ultimately he is working to protect rather than destroy. When he was 24, however, his view of the world changed. His father fell to an assassin’s poisoned blade while he and Kurohi were escorting a caravan, and too tied up with his own opponents to help. After this, and due to a shortage of bodyguard/escort jobs, he became what he calls an assassin of assassins. It was then that he purchased his black gear, and began to, as he describes it, live in the shadows to protect the light. That being said, even now, before he takes an assassination job, he carefully weighs the outcomes. Only if he feels the kill will greatly benefit the greater good beyond a reasonable doubt, or the target is a clear traitor, will he take such a job.
Kurohi received his swords from his father upon completing his training in his unique fighting style at the age of 19. It is said that in dark areas and shadows, Kurohi’s ability to disappear rivals that of a Ranger. Though he personally denies such accolades, many would-be assassins have found themselves ambushed by his blades, earning him the nickname “Demon Shadow” among the criminal underworld.
