Will Treaty strategy scenario
If you track Will down during the Gathering and tell him that you want to participate in his strategy scenario exercise, Will digs into his belt pouch and brings out a sheaf of folded parchment and hands you one page. Upon opening it you will find the following written in his rather sloppy text:
The Gathering Year 657:
Strategy Exercise I; Murder at the River
The Setting:
You have entered a village in your fief where a woman was murdered. Upon investigating her death, you find out that she had been feeling neglected and lonely because her husband was always working, trying to earn enough gold to support his family.
During the investigation you discover that the woman met a charismatic young man that charmed her into stealing away to visit him on the other side of the river when next she could get away. When the night came, she crossed the only bridge and went to the man’s house. In the early morning hours she tried to return to her home before her husband found out she was gone. She came to the bridge but there was a madman in the middle of it blocking traffic and threatening to kill anyone who crossed.
You question witnesses and find out she went to the ferryman a few miles down river, but didn’t have any coins to pay for passage. The Ferryman refused to let her cross for free, stating that he was on hard times and needed the money to buy food for his family. If he let one person cross for free and word got out, he would have a riot on his hands with people demanding to cross for free and would loose his only form of income.
The woman then went to a friend of hers that lived on that side of the river and asked to borrow some money to pay the ferryman but the friend refused because she had been cheating on her husband and he felt that to give her money would be to condone her bad behavior, so he sent her on her way.
In the end she attempted to cross the bridge and the madman killed her.
Who is responsible for this tragedy; the woman, the husband, the lover, the friend, the ferryman or the madman?
You have been tasked with providing justice in this case. What do you do?
___
Or you can choose Exercise 2: Survival in winter:
You are returning to Araluen from a reconnaissance assignment in northern Picta. You were forced to leave your ranger horse in Norgate when you entered Picta disguised as a Scotti vagabond. You have vital information that must be conveyed to Crowley as soon as possible, and your cover has been blown. You are being hunted by Scotti intelligence and word has spread to the major settlements that you are a spy. Villagers are on the lookout for you to collect on the reward and bounty hunters are shadowing you.
Nearly exhausted, you find a dilapidated cabin deep in the woods in a secluded mountain valley. You take shelter in the cabin and start a small fire on the hearth, hanging your cloak and wet clothes to dry on rickety chairs in front of the fireplace. You are out of food and exhausted so you curl up and go to sleep. An hour later you are awakened by the roar of fire. A bounty hunter has found you and set the cabin on fire to flush you out. The shelter you are currently occupying is destroyed. You are alone, without your ranger horse and you know the bounty hunter is out there waiting for you. You are wearing only what one would wear indoors with a fire on the hearth (tunic, trousers, and simple shoes - remember you were under cover so you are not wearing your normal ranger gear). You can only salvage three items from the wreckage (my possibles bag full of gear does not count, no wishing for more wishes.) before the cabin and the rest of your belongings are consumed by the fire. It is winter, one hour after sundown; daytime temps have been in the low 20s, nighttime 15 below. There is a foot and half of fresh powder snow on the ground. The nearest village is 30 miles away. Norgate is another two days of travel through rough, mountainous, hostile terrain.
What do you take?
And what is your plan of action?
