Tory grinned at her, "What about all that 'Honor among Thieves' thing?" Tory's grin faded, "Besides, I am a murderer and father accepts me, so I doubt he is going to be all that fired up over a thief." She said matter-of-factly.
Nissa rolled her eyes then shrugged, she had used up her words for a good little while. It was time she kept true to her reputation and was quiet.
She walked over to her ranger horse, Chocolate Chip, and talked softly to the pony for several minutes while Chip ate the grain she gave him. She only had enough for one more day in the saddle bags. He had spent the day foraging around the woods for grass, but the pickings in this area were getting pretty slim.
Then she banked the fire for the night. She hated to leave it going, knowing it could attract attention, but she couldn't put it out for Ben's sake.
Nissa took the rangers brief absence to stare into the glowing embers of the fire and think about her situation. it wasn't a very ideal one she had to admit. She also didn't understand why Tory didn't want her to be a spy in the camp. Honestly why did she care so much? She was a wanted thief who would hang if she ever got caught. Why did Troy care what happened to her? Very few people in her life had actually cared for her well being so it was very hard for her to imagine that Tory actually might care if she lived or died. Perhaps she could try to reason with the girl. She seemed sensible enough.
"Get some sleep, I will take first watch." Tory ordered Mouse,
Mouse scowled at Tory she did not like being told what to do. However she bit her tongue and made herself comfortable. She wasn't exactly sure she could trust the girl but seeing as she was a armed ranger she didn't have much of a choice but to obey order however much she wanted to talk back. She laid one hand on her boot where her dagger was just in case she needed it and despite everything she found that her eyes drifted close seemingly of their own volition and she fell asleep.

Tory slowly moved, flexing muscles taut from sitting perfectly still for the last hour. She had walked away from the camp twice during her watch just to check the perimeter, leaving Chip to guard the camp and alert her of any trouble. Four hours had passed and Tory believed Mouse had actually slept, but now it was her turn to stand watch. She looked around the camp and the trees around their camp and then went over to check on Chip, her ranger horse. She whispered a few words in his ears, instructing him to watch over her while she slept.
She walked over and knelt beside her bedroll, moving the saddle to use as a pillow and pushed the packs over so they could keep her back warm. She turned to Mouse, wondering if the thief would be startled if Tory touched her to wake her. She decided to play it safe and just said softly, “Mouse, it’s your turn to stand watch.”

She decided to play it safe and just said softly, “Mouse, it’s your turn to stand watch.”
Mouse was instantly awake she sat up and stretched. "All right." She got to her feet and shivered in the sudden chill air. She walked a little ways away from the camp and casually leaned on a tree her eyes never stopping for very long in one place. She kept herself occupied by letting her thoughts spill out from her mind. This was an odd situation, she had never been in this kind of place before. Working together with a Ranger? Going back to see Avery. She wasn't to sure about that, she had sworn never to go back again. She rubbed her arm where she had been branded all those years ago. Life was a strange thing, she needed to just convince Tory somehow that her being a spy was the best way to go. But how to do that? She stood there on leaning on the tree barely moving thinking on where she found herself and how she could now get out without getting killed.

Tory thought she might have trouble falling asleep because she wasn’t sure just what Mouse might do while she slept, but after watching Mouse fall asleep, Tory figured it was only fair for her to trust Mouse as Mouse had trusted her. As she drifted off to sleep, she found herself musing at how odd a situation this was.
She woke suddenly, just a few minutes before the dawn started to lighten the sky on the horizon, as was her usual way. She lay there for a moment, feigning sleep by keeping her breathing slow and regular as she listened to the sounds around her. She heard the usual forest sounds of morning birds waking and night birds settling down for their day’s nap and the comforting sound of Chip cropping grass not far from her head.
Slowly she opened her eyes and looked across the fire at Mouse’s bedroll. It was empty. Which was a good thing, for Mouse was supposed to still be on watch. She opened her eyes and looked around, stretched and then got up to check on Ben. As the sky started to grow brighter she thought his face looked like it had a more normal color to it this morning. He seemed to be sleeping peacefully.
Tory looked around the clearing for Mouse, but didn’t see her. She glanced up into the trees, but still didn’t see the thief. “Good morning, Mouse,” Tory said softly, hoping she was just hiding and that she had not left as soon as Tory had fallen asleep. “I am going to get some water and brew some tea for Ben. It is going to be a rough day for him and I think I should get some pain killer in him before we get started.” Hopefully Tory wasn’t talking to herself as she picked up the bucket and headed for the nearby stream.

Mouse sighed as she shifted her weight on the branch of the tree. She watched the young girl as she started to get camp together. She had wrestled with what to do the entire time she had been on watch. For whatever reason she just couldn't justify leaving the young girl alone. She didn't really know why. She was a criminal, she stole, stabbed, cheated, lied, and lived in the shadows why should she care about one girl now? Maybe it was becuase deep in her heart she wasn't a bad person, she just liked to pretend that she was. Maybe it was becuase she knew what it was like to be alone to face unsurmountable odds alone and didn't exactly want that girl to go through that. Maybe it was becuase the girl knew what she had gone through, or maybe it was because she was silly and getting soft in her old age. But for whatever reason, she knew that she couldn't live with herself if she just up and left the girl now. She had to help her or she would be the person everyone thought she was and she just couldn't stand that.
With a heavy sigh Mouse know exactly what she had to do despite everything, she slid silently to the ground and quietly joined the unconcious ranger at the camp, she picked up a stick and poked at the fire waiting for Tory to return.

Tory lugged the heavy bucket back up the slope from the stream and carried it to the camp. A look of relief flashed across her face as she saw Mouse stoking the fire. She nodded to Mouse, “Thanks,” as she poured water into the copper tea pot she always carried in her camp gear. She looked sheepish for a moment, “I… uh… I wasn’t sure if… well… if you would still be here this morning.” Tory stammered. “Thanks, for… you know.” She said lamely, not wanting to put her fear into words. With everything that had happened to her in the past, she half expected to be alone when she woke each morning on the trail. Given Mouse’s background, she more than half expected to be here alone this morning. She was very grateful that she wasn’t alone, but she knew Mouse wouldn’t want her to get all mushy about it. She cleared her throat and went about preparing Ben’s tea and their breakfast of honey oat cakes and a mild white cheese.
“I guess we better get going soon. It is a long walk to that village.” She brought Chip over to stand in front of Ben’s litter. “Can you help me tie him in the stretcher and get it hooked up to Chip?” As they worked to get Ben settled and clean up the camp, Tory wondered again if she was doing the right thing.
With a shrug she squared her shoulders and left a subtle trail marker for Patrick in case he came back to the camp. It was the old system of markers they had used her first year as an apprentice. He would know where she went, and anyone else would think it was a random group of stones and deadwood. She made sure there was little evidence they had camped there, “well it’s not perfect, but I guess it will have to do. Ready?” she asked Mouse. “What do you think? Should we stay on the trail or cut through the woods? Will it make any difference in Avery finding us if he wants to?”

“I… uh… I wasn’t sure if… well… if you would still be here this morning.” Tory stammered. “Thanks, for… you know.” She said lamely, not wanting to put her fear into words.
Mouse smiled a little. "Yeah I didn't think I would still be here either." she admited and watched as the young girl went about her morning routine. She gratefully sccepted the food and ate slowly, savoring each bite.
"I guess we better get going soon. It is a long walk to that village.” She brought Chip over to stand in front of Ben’s litter. “Can you help me tie him in the stretcher and get it hooked up to Chip?” As they worked to get Ben settled and clean up the camp, Tory wondered again if she was doing the right thing.
Nissa nodded. "Yeah I can help." she got up and helped her carefully move ben doing her best to keep him steady as she helped. As much as she hated helping a ranger she knew she should, it felt weird but right at the same time if that made any sense. Of course it didn't but there wasn't much she could do about it. She had said she would help and the more she thought about it the more she realized that it was her word more than anything else that she wanted to stand by. She didn't want to breahk her word, whatever people thoght of her at least they couldn't say she was someone who was never true to their word.
“well it’s not perfect, but I guess it will have to do. Ready?” she asked Mouse. “What do you think? Should we stay on the trail or cut through the woods? Will it make any difference in Avery finding us if he wants to?”
She watched the ranger couriously but didn't say anything, it was probably some weird ranger ritual that they liked to do every now and then. She gave it a minute or two thought then shook her head.
"I think that we should be fine. As far as those bandits know the ranger is dead they didn't exactly stick around to make sure. So I don't think we have to worry about Avery just yet. We should stick to the trail it will be easier going for him becuase it's a smoother ride. And it is faster anyway. The sooner he gets help the better right?"

Tory agreed. “Alright. Let’s get going then.” She clucked at Chip and the ranger pony started out at a brisk walk, dragging the litter behind him. Tory kept her bow strung and an arrow in hand, watching the trees above and around them.
The trip to the small village took the better part of two days and was surprisingly uneventful. They approached it around 4 hours after sunset. The weather had taken a nasty turn. A very cold rain drizzled down their necks. By the time they reached the village, she was miserable and trying not to show it.
“It’s not much of a village, is it?” She muttered from the fringes of the woods, trying to make out the purposes of each of the thatched roof buildings lining the road. There was a stone building, larger than the rest, in the center of the town. “That could be a church.” Tory pointed. “This first one is obviously a forge and stables. Most likely a ferrier service.” At the far end of the town a dim light could be seen from two windows through the hazy rain. Tory thought she could hear voices come from it. “I wonder if that is a tavern or inn. It doesn’t look like much.”
She turned to Mouse, “Have you been here before? It doesn’t look familiar to me.” The street had a lamppost at each end and one in the middle, but the light was so dim, they didn’t do much to lighten the street. For the most part, it looked quiet and most of the houses were dark. “I’m going to go check that building down at the end out. You want to stay here or come with me? It doesn’t look like they have any type of law, but you never know.”

Mouse looked the town over a feeling of unsettlement came over her. She wasn't quite sure this was such a good idea anymore. Mouse looked in the directions of the pointing figure silently, she rather agreed with her companion assumptions. She frowmed at the inn, the young girl did have a point if it was an inn that was good a tavern? Well not a lot of good people went to those at least an inn would be a tad mor erespectable if a little rough around the edges.
Mouse looked sharply at the girl, some instinct told her not ot let the girl go. "No." she said simply. "I can't let you go down there." then fearing the Tori would think she was going soft she said in a more stern tone. "I am not staying alone with a horse and a ranger. Besides I can probably blend in a little bit better than you if this town is as righ and unseemly as I think it is. You stay here I will go check it out and be back as soon as I can." she looked the Tori in the eye. "I promise, I will come back." She had no idea why meeting this girl was slowly changing her from a hard caloused bandit into a fluffy pillow but it was and she was fighting hard agaisnt it and some how losing. "Please stay here I will be back." she started toward the town and glanced back once or twice to make sure the girl was staying put.

Tory hesitated a moment, but she saw the determination in Mouse’s eyes and nodded her head. “Okay, but be careful. If you get into trouble try to send some sort of signal and I will come in shooting,” She grinned and held up her bow. “I am going to rig a tarp over Ben to get him out of this drizzling rain.”
She started to turn towards Ben when a thought occurred to her, “Mouse, wait!” She said softly, “Do you think it could be Avery down there in that building? Is that why you don’t want me to go?” If it was Avery and his gang in the town that changed their situation quite a bit.
“If it is him, can you get back away from him?” Tory was afraid for her new friend. She looked at Ben. He had to come first before any bandit hunting. She needed to get him to a safe place, plus she wanted to get a letter off to Crowley before she engaged Avery. This wasn’t the time yet to go after Avery and Tory was not sure she would be able to rescue Mouse if she were caught.
___
Once Mouse started down the hill, Tory took her ranger horse into a small group of tall oak trees clustered at the top of the hill. There was a clearing under them from a pile of old acorns and broken shells. The rain was barely dripping through the canopy overhead and Tory was able to tie her tarp in the tree branches to ward off the rain. She used quick release knots so she could free the tarp with a few quick yanks if she had to move in a hurry.
She kept Ben’s litter attached to Chip and threw a wool blanket over her horse so he wouldn’t take a chill. She wished she could light a fire, or better yet, get a warm room for the three of them and a warm stall for Chip. “I sure hope Mouse is okay.” She said softly to Ben and Chip, not expecting an answer.
Carefully she raised Ben’s head and dripped some water into his mouth. He didn’t have a fever as far as she could tell, so that was a good sign, but he really should be waking up by now. The herbs she had given him to help with pain and keep him drowsy should have worn off a while ago. “Ben! Ben, are you awake? It’s Tory.” She gently shook his shoulder.

nodded her head. “Okay, but be careful. If you get into trouble try to send some sort of signal and I will come in shooting,” She grinned and held up her bow. “I am going to rig a tarp over Ben to get him out of this drizzling rain.”
a small smile came to Mouses lips at that. "Thanks, it's nice to know I have backup." the words weren't a lie either it did feel nice to know that someone would come help bail her out if she needed. Not that she would cuz she was smarter than that. Well she hoped at least. "That sounds like a good idea at least the rain isn't to terrible under the trees."
She started to turn towards Ben when a thought occurred to her, “Mouse, wait!” She said softly, “Do you think it could be Avery down there in that building? Is that why you don’t want me to go?”
Mouse turned back planning to sigh but didn't upon hearing the finished sentence. The girl had a point she really really did. She paused a minute or so thinking over her response. "I'm not quite sure, I assume it isn't but that doesn't really mean anything. I don't think he'd be here but nothing is certain." she paused then added. "I admit yes thats part of the reason why I dont' want you to go, that and you are very young and thus town does not look like the type to take kindly to young girls. Even if they are rangers."
“If it is him, can you get back away from him?”
Mouse frowned then sighed. "I don't know I guess we will just have to wait and see. And worry about all that if the time comes. Besides you know more about keeping ben alive then I do so it just makes sense that you should stay here." she turned around and walked quickly down the hill so she wouldn't have to answer anymore questions.

Tory was concerned that Ben had not yet woken up, but perhaps it was better that he wasn’t awake right now while she hunkered down next to him under the tarp with Chip standing behind her munching on some grain in his feed bag.
From here Tory could see Mouse enter the town and followed her movements with her eyes. She sat with her bow at the ready and an arrow knocked on the string.
“I wonder if I should unhook the litter from Chip in case I have to ride in to help Mouse,” Tory mused to herself. “Or leave him hooked up in case we have to leave out of here in a hurry.” She studied each building in the little village and realized it was not very unusual for a country village such as this to be so quiet after sunset. These people were probably farmers and herdsmen. They got up with the dawn and likely went to sleep a couple of hours after sunset. So there was a good chance there wasn’t anything strange going on here. At least Tory hoped there wasn’t.
Now, where did Mouse go? She had looked away for a minute to study one of the houses and now she could not tell where the thief was. “She is really good,” Tory told Chip, or Ben, if he was waking up. “She really could make a decent ranger, if she wasn’t on the wrong side of the law, and didn’t hate us so much.” Tory glanced back down at Ben. “Don’t tell her I said that. I doubt she would appreciate it.”
Tory shifted a little into a more comfortable position and settled in to wait, at the ready if Mouse ran into trouble, or Ben woke up.

As mouse entered the village she looked around her curiously, it was quiet, though quite a few lights were on in thehouses as familes were gathered together. Eating or just doing whatever it was the Families did in thedark and the rain. She looked over at large building that had more light coming from the windows then any other it also also had noise this was obviously the local tavern. She hesitated for a minute wondering if she should go inside, she wa about to throw caution to the wind and enter when a sign from a building not far from teh tavern was moving in the breeze. It has a rather old and peeling paint job but the symbol was still readable enough it was the sign of a healer. She quickly made her way over to the building and without knocking entered. There was a single lamp giving off a dim light in the room, it smelled like herbs and the woods. There were a few beds on the opposite end of the room all of them were empty. Various plants hung from the ceiling and sat in jars and pots all along the wall. Someone cleared their throat. She spun around to see an older looking gentleman looking at her. "Can I help you?" he asked. "Are you a healer?" "Yes." "I have a," she hesitated for a second before continuing. "Friend who is badly hurt." "What happened?" he asked. "He was shot." "Where is he?" "Out in the woods, me and my other friend weren't sure if we would find help or trouble so she stayed back." "Well of course i will help. Bring them here immidiately." she nodded. "Thanks." She quickly ran out of the shop and all the way to where Tori was waiting for her, she was breathing heavily and said inbetween breaths. "Theres a...healer...just down the....road...he...said...he would...help... and to... bring him...right away."

Tory listened to the rain splattering on the tarp above them and pondered their next step. She wondered if Patrick was on Avery’s trail, or if he was pursuing some other mission. Would he be angry if she went after Avery? If he was going to be angry, would that make any difference to her or change her plan? Tory shook her head, ‘No, If I am truly a ranger, then I have to do what needs to be done, and if Avery is the one who shot Ben, then he needs to be brought to justice,’ she murmured softly. Still, there was just a hint of fear in the pit of her stomach at the thought of what Avery might do to her, if she were captured. Ringulf had told her once, “Trust your training. If you start feeling fear, go back to your training and it will get you through.” That was some comfort, but since her training had been a bit sporadic compared to most Ranger Apprentices, it didn’t provide as much comfort as Ringulf probably thought it would. On the other hand, thought Tory, I have learned a lot that most apprentices never have been taught. Eluding capture was one skill she was now very adept in, and that meant she knew the tricks the outlaws would do to avoid capture. That had to work to her advantage. Plus Mouse knew Avery, how he thought, where he thought he would be safe, possibly even where he was and how he would react if cornered. That also had to work to their advantage. No, finding Avery was most likely not going to be the problem. Capturing him was going to be the hard part. Separating him from his men was going to be the key.
She was debating different strategies when she saw Mouse running up the hill. Tory stood up to meet her and glanced behind to see if there was trouble. No one was following her.
Mouse was breathing heavily and said inbetween breaths. "There’s a...healer...just down the....road...he...said...he would...help... and to... bring him...right away."
“That is terrific!” Tory exclaimed as she removed Chip’s now empty feed bag and stuffed it back into the saddlebag. She started to take down the tarp, “I hope we can find a place to stay for the night. I wouldn’t mind getting out of this cold rain.” In moments she was ready, with Ben secure in the litter behind Chip.
They quickly made their way back to the healer’s house and Tory knocked softly on the door. It opened and a nice-looking older man with gray hair and tired eyes motioned her inside. “Bring him in here.” Tory and Mouse hefted the litter, grunting a little under his weight and followed him to an interior room that was brightly lit with several oil lamps. In the center was a high wooden table. They placed Ben and the litter on it.
The healer helped Tory remove Ben’s sodden cloak and outer tunic and then Tory showed the healer Ben’s wound. It looked like it was healing nicely to her. “I got the arrowhead out and have been packing it with an herbal paste and soldier moss. He had a fever for three days, but it seems to have broken and I think he is healing nicely. I just don’t know if he is going to be able to move his legs anymore. The point was right next to his spine.”
The healer examined the wound and cleaned Tory’s moss pack from it. The flesh was now pink around the hole instead of the angry red and the fluid draining from it looked clear. He looked up at her, with surprise, “you did the surgery?”
Tory nodded, “with some help from a friend. I was afraid I may have dug too deeply in trying to remove it.” Tory bit her lower lip, hoping she hadn’t done anything wrong.
“No, no, you did a good job. I doubt I could have done better. Was it a broadhead?” Tory nodded. “Thought so, from this tear here. They are easier to push through, than trying to pull back out.”
Tory knew that only too well, rubbing her hip subconsciously where she had been shot during the war. She had a permanent limp from that broadhead arrow point. “I couldn’t push it through, or it would have done a lot more damage.”
“Too true,” the healer agreed as he poured some clear liquid into the wound. Bubbles started pouring out of it. Tory watched, fascinated. “Soda water,” the healer answered her unasked question. “It cleans out infection.”
“Made from baking soda?” Tory asked and he nodded. “I had no idea. I need to add that to my kit.” She watched him rinse off the wound and then rebandaged it. “So he is going to be okay?”
The healer didn’t answer her at first but continued to examine Ben, noting the lump on his head. He took a look at Ben’s eyes, shining a lamp in them. “How long has he been unconscious?”
“He hit his head when he fell from his horse, but he has been awake briefly a couple of times since then. I gave him some fennel, chamomile and a touch of hemlock early this morning so he would sleep while we traveled. It should have worn off by now.” Tory said worriedly. “I am not sure why he hasn’t woken up yet, but this is the first day he has really slept peacefully, without fever dreams or pain in at least four days. Maybe he is just really tired.”
The healer nodded, “let’s give him a stimulant to counter that hemlock. Set him up for a minute.” Tory hefted Ben’s shoulders and rested his head against her shoulder as the healer coaxed some warm coffee down him. After a few swallows, he helped Tory lay him back down and they moved him to a cot in the next room. There were six other cots in the room. “You two are welcome to sleep here and keep an eye on him during the night. I expect he will be waking up soon.”
“Thanks,” Tory breathed with relief. “Can you tell me where I can stable my horse?”
“Just past the tavern is the livery. You can get a hot meal at the tavern too. They stay open all night.” He motioned to the back door out of the room, “I will leave that open for you.”
Tory handed him a silver coin, “Thank you, and thanks for keeping our presence here to yourself.” He nodded understanding and went back into the other room to tidy up.
“Shall we get Chip out of sight and then go check out the tavern? A hot meal sounds good to me, especially if I don’t have to cook it!” Tory hung Ben’s cloak and tunic on a peg near his bed and pulled the covers over him. “He should be okay for a bit.”

Nissa watched the proceedings silently. She took it all in, observing without making any comment. She was a little leery of the healer even though he seemed like the type NOT to ask stupid questions one never knew. It probably helped that the injured guy was a ranger. People usually didn't ask questions when a ranger was involved. Even though she didn't persay like rangers she did genuinly hope that Ben would be all right in the end. For Tory's sake, she got the feeling the girl had suffered a lot in her short life and she really did hope that Ben dyeing would not be counted in that in the end. At the very leat the healer seemed to know what he was doing and thats all that mattered, now it was all just a waiting game.
“You two are welcome to sleep here and keep an eye on him during the night. I expect he will be waking up soon.”

Nissa wasn't quite sure she wanted to sleep in the healers quarters but as she had been standing there the light drizzle had turned into quite the down pour so any thought she had of roughing it quickly went out the window.
"Yeah let's put chip up and get something to eat." She led the way to the stable and then showed Tori where the tavern was, the warm light that filtered through the windows looked very inviting. Before they entered the tavern she paused and put a hand on Torys arm. "I think it goes without saying that we should not draw any sort of attention to ourselves. Let's not mention the injured ranger or anything else about oursevles." that said she opened the door and entered the room, it was quite loud with multiple people talking to ecachother trying to be hard over the band of minstrels in the corner. The two girls slipped quietly into a corner and sat down.
