Business: Free-Faire Market (Free Enterprise, Fair prices)
Owner: Ben Skevlic, a former "King's Archer" (Not many people are aware that he was a Ranger, and he likes to keep it that way.)
Discription: Roughly 5 acres of prime real estate in Desparation, with a flea/farmer's market-style setting. About 3 acres are corrals and small paddocks, with a long two-story building on one end. The lower level is a stable, provided for market sellers who have no residence in town, while the upper level houses the Market's security personnel. The rest of the market is neat ordered rows of semi permanent booths, which are leased out to anyone with legitamite goods and services to sell. The spaces are leased for five coppers a week, and security is provided at no extra charge to the sellers. The security is also responsible for the order and welfare of both sellers and the general public within the market grounds.
Once on the outskirts of town, and originally bought with the intent of building and running a livery stable for the town at large, Ben decided the let the land sit empty as a proverbial middle finger to the Guild as the town grew up around it when the Merchant's Guild gave the right to own and operate to another guild member after discovering that Ben wasn't inclined to join the Guild. When multiple offers to buy the land from him were turned down, the Guild decided to add pressure by amending a town ordinance to state that no land in the town proper was allowed to sit idle. The intent was to force Ben to sell out or join the guild in order to get permission to build and operate a livery, but they failed to account for the wily former Ranger's ability to find a loophole and exploit it to his advantage.
He promptly found carpenters and builders that weren't employed by the Guild and built the market, with its barn, lodgings, and corrals. He fenced it as a security measure against the Guild, leaving two entrance/exits--one for pedestrians from the town, and one for livestock, carts, and wagons at the back. He then hired security to keep the peace-- much like bouncers in a saloon--and charged a fee, which enables sellers to make a profit while charging low competitive prices to their customers, to negate the Guild's complaining that his marketplace was a pit of rable-rousing freeloaders who brought down the land value of the town.
(OOC: Will try to add a sketch of the layout.)
