I think I'll take Reason #2. Do scribes train with weapons? I suppose not but what if they need to defend themselves, like in this case? Just curious.

They probably don't train with weapons.
However you might be able to justify some very basic self defense (like they have a battleschool friend who taught them just enough to get away from someone or something like that.)

Yeah and don't forget the middle ages was a rather lawless society. it was very much like the old west. the law was not always strong or plentiful enough to protect everyone so almost everyone cariied at least a dagger a cudgle or a staff and knew how to use them. it was taught to you by your parents or elders and was part of life. The least you might have was a table knife that was about6-8 inches and sharp and pointy to cut meat and bread and to stick it ind put it in your mouth because very rarely no one except nobles or the well off had more than his or her eating knife and sometimes a wooden spoon. (I think they can gouge out and eye..least the sherrif thought so!)
