Question for everyone: When you have a dream (not a nightmare), is it an indication of a good night's sleep or does it mean that you've slept really poorly? I'm just wondering because, for me, dreams are an indication that I've had a really bad sleep - and I mean bad, I usually end up in a near zombie like state with some of the bigger dreams, which is not like me at all - but a couple of the people I know consider dreams an indication of a good night's sleep.
And Ivory, if you can remember, what did I look like in your dream. I'm just curious.

When one dreams, you should have fallen into a deep sleep. Most people tend to say that's good, I suppose. The nightmare, or dream, depends on you and what you were thinking when you went to sleep. When you talk or walk in your sleep, that's a sign of even deeper sleep.

Srry Dougal, but I prefer not to remember your guys' faces. It'd make it too hard to write back. I'm...more 'open' online...
And not really Cutebabys. One always dreams, it's part of the sleeping process (usually after an hour of sleep - there's four different steps of sleeping (I think?) and that fifteen minutes of dreaming is the last step, then it repeats until you wake up - that's why you can have more than one dream a night). A lot of people simply don't remember the dreams though, but they do have them every night.
And I'm pretty sure things I dream about definitely isn't what I was thinking moments before I fell asleep. Trust me, I even tried meditating before bed, focusing on something besides what I 'dream' about, and I still ended up dreaming about the blasted stuff that I didn't want to.
As for the sleepwalking being a sign of deep sleep, I have no idea. I used to sleepwalk a lot and never remember any of it. I was also easily controlled then too (a simple worded command and I'd pretty much follow), but if touched I usually woke quickly (which would partially explain my paranoia).
About dreams being a sign of a good night's sleep, I don't really think it matters either way. The reason why you're like a zombie though may be because of the fact that you liked it and wanted to stay there. But then, it may not be. *shrug*
Nightmares on the otherhand can imply a current troubling situation/memory and I guess dreams could too, but I don't think I've ever heard of that happening, but then, I have a tendency to change the topic when it focuses on dreams, so yeah...

Dougal asked: Question for everyone: When you have a dream (not a nightmare), is it an indication of a good night's sleep or does it mean that you've slept really poorly?
I always thought it was because of a good night's sleep at first, but as I have gotten older, I actually remember more dreams than I used to.
Since I wake up a LOT more during the night now, and remember a lot more dreams, I am thinking that it may be an indication that I am not sleeping as deeply.
When I am exhausted, I will sleep 4 or 5 hours straight through and not move and lots of times will not remember more than one or two dreams during that time.
So my answer is that if you are having lots of dreams - or remembering lots of dreams each night, then you might not be getting as good a sleep as you should be because you are waking up more often, or in a closer to waking than deep sleep mode.
Another reason I think that is because of the scan they did this summer where they hooked my head up to electrodes and measured the activity in different parts of the brain and they said they got unusual activity between my "waking" and my "sleeping" state. (I never did actually fall asleep, but I did let my mind wander for a bit) and inbetween I was actually directing a daydream and I think that is what they were picking up. I usually "daydream" about something to work up to falling asleep so that I can hopefully dream about that and not about spiders or something equally icky.

I had one of those scans too or whatnot and they said I was sleeping, but I didn't ever fall asleep. I tried, controlled my breathing and everything, but I was awake the whole time. They said I'd fallen asleep and ma said I stopped breathing for about a minute, but then ma has a tendency to exaggerate. *grin*
I have a question though, has anyone ever dreamed within under an hour of catching sleep? [they told me that you were only supposed to dream after an hour because of the cycle, but I don't really trust doctors...]

Fair enough, Ivory, I'm pretty much the same myself.
@brandy: Glad to know I'm not the only one who only sleeps well when they're not dreaming.

And Ther, yes I have. I slept for about 30 minutes. And then I woke up, dreams were too horrible. Or maybe it wasn't 30 minutes. *shrugs* I know I'm not much help. But I still think it's possible as my sister talks in her sleep and I assume she's dreaming when she does that. And she says some weird stuff too. And that's before 1 hour.
Also, maybe it's not what you're thinking of when you fall asleep, but it's your personality? And I still think dreams are a sign of deep slumber.

Perhaps, Cutebaby's, but that first sentance says "usually people". Not everyone is the same or has the same things happen in their brain when they sleep.
I actually don't get to REM sleep all that often. I am a very light sleeper and normally the slightest change in my surroundings wake me up.
My neurologist wants to do a full sleep study on me, but I don't want to do it. I would never be able to get to sleep with those electrodes hooked to my head. And when I take drugs to help me sleep I have horrible, horrible nightmares that I can't control or wake up from. I wake up feeling like I have been run over with a 18-wheeler truck after that.
Course, my lack of REM sleep could also be part of the reason I am tired and sleepy most of the time. I tend to take little cat naps during the day (like during lunch at work - 10 or 15 min) and I often have a dream during those naps. (so, yes, Ther, I do dream shortly after falling asleep - not an hour into it.) I normally lay down and fall asleep right into a dream, often where I left off on the last one the night before.
Early this morning I was having a weird dream. I was trying to rescue a bunch of children from some society of wacko's that were using them for slave labor high in a tower. I was with a bunch of friends (but don't know who any of them were). The children that had been with our group had not yet been "processed" so they still knew who they were and who we were and were trying to escape, but the other children were brain-washed and kept chanting "I am a child of the state. I live to serve..." (there was more) over and over again and would not help themselves to get away.
My group had a chase scene where we almost got captured by the State's troops and combat robots, but we managed to reprogram one of the big robots and used it against them and shot a bunch of them up. The chase/fight scene took place in a shopping mall. Then we climbed down one level and found the children and got our kids out and heading down the stairs.
I was one of the last ones left at the top and was trying to free the other kids, who didn't want to go when I got captured. I was taken before their Queen and we had a nice little chat. I told her she was sadistic and a murderer and kidnapper. She wasn't impressed. however, they missed one of my guns and I managed to shoot her and kill her.
When the Queen died, everyone, especially the children , acted as if they had woken up from a bad dream and began running around screaming and crying and the kids attacked the adults. Apparently the Queen was controlling everyone's minds and when she died, they were no longer controlled.
I herded up a bunch of the kids and we went running down the spiral staircase to the bottom of the tower towards my group's spaceship. Then I woke up.
Kind of a tense dream, but it was kinda cool too. And that one occured between 5 and 6 am after I had gotten up to use the bathroom and I was more or less dozing. I managed to direct the dream during the fight with the robots so that our guy reprogrammed it after it seemed like we were all going to get captured, but I wasn't able to change the dream when I got captured. I was able to change it to me killing the Queen instead of the other way around. I usually can't control them so well when I am in a deeper sleep. Normally only can do that when I realize that I am dreaming.
Oh, and the floors in the tower were this white plastic stuff with bright silver sparkles in it and the walkways were marked by a very vivid royal blue with silver sparkles in it. Most of the rest of the place was white or had clear walls and the people were wearing black and silver for the most part. The kids were wearing blue and red outfits. One little girl had on an orange jumper dress and she reminded me of one of the kids on Star Trek Next Generation episode with "Wesley" when he got kidnapped along with some of the other NG children.
Pretty weird, eh?

@ Brandwyn: lol. Have you actually ever been ran over by a 18-wheeler? *grin* Just curious...lol. :-)
As for your dream/nightmare [depending on the view one looks], honestly, I don't find it that weird, but then again, I doubt I'd ever find anything weird again considering the circumstances...lol. :-)
They say that if you die in a dream though you're about to die in life. Anyone belief it? Also, has anyone died in one of their dreams/nightmares?

No, I can't say that I believe in the idea that you'll die in real life if you die in a dream. Then again, I don't know anyone who has actually died in their dream, so it might be possible.
Speaking of dreams, I've just had the weirdest couple of dreams. The first is a bit sketchy, but I know that it involved computer programming, a MMORPG, dragons, fast cars, my school, dragons and a windmill. How it was all put together I cannot remember, but it was extremely weird.
The second one was where I was in North Korea (which, for some reason was located in my school) for some reason and a group of friends were trying to help a farmer who was being held by a group of bandits. I ended up dressed up in a giant roast chicken, lying to government officials while the UN looked on with mixed approval/disapproval. In the end, we saved the farmer but no one helped me get out of the chicken, which was too greasy for me to get off myself.

lol. The second one sounds like a nightmare. *grin* Isn't it coolio though how the dream world works? Things make total sense and yet...doesn't. lol. :-)
Speaking of dreams...I haven't had a nightmare in three nights!!!!! ^-^

*confused* Theramind. I withdraw myself from this battle/debate. It's much too confusing. I've got to concentrate on the life cycles of animals, energy conversions and yadda yadda yadda. *groans* *goes back to studying*
